By the time we got to the restaurant, I had finished with my phone calls.

Voula greeted Jace and me as soon as we walked through the door. “Hey, koukla! You can take your usual table…” She petered off when she caught sight of Vander. Her eyes lit up with appreciation and she wagged her eyebrows at me. “You’re going to need a bigger table today. Who’s this?” She asked Jace.

Jace grinned easily. “This is my dad.”

Voula’s eyes flew to mine and I nodded. The reassuring pressure of Vander’s hand met my back, and I cleared my throat. “This is Vander. He was my university boyfriend, and he is Jace’s father.”

“Aw,” Voula grinned. “You’re Mr. Dolmadakia.”

I laughed out loud. Leave it to Voula to break the tension. Vander grinned at me, bemused. “Mr. Dolmadakia?”

I shrugged. “Elisavet talks too much.”

Vander

“Well, that was anticlimactic,” Ruby said drily.

We dropped Jace off at Yiayia’s to have a sleepover with Alex, while Ruby and I stole a few hours to ourselves. I tucked her hand under mine on my thigh, then pulled out of the driveway and headed for my place, hopefully soon to be our place.

“He took it well.”

“He didn’t waste any time claiming you,” she murmured.

I glanced at her. “That’s a good thing, no?”

“It is…” She petered off then continued firmly, “It is. I just need a moment to catch up. I’m going to be bombarded with questions.”

“Ruby,” I hesitated. “You know you don’t owe anyone any explanation.”

“They’re all going to wonder,” she muttered grumpily.

“So? Let them speculate. As soon as they see him and I together, their doubts will be laid to rest.”

“They’re going to think I lied about Drew, that you were a deadbeat dad, they’re going to think a whole lot of things.”

“Again, so? What does it matter to you? To us? To Jace? I think most people will take it like Voula did. And those that don’t, don’t matter. Those that do matter, know the truth. No one else is entitled to your life story.”

She was quiet for a moment, then nodded. “Okay.”

“Yeah?” I wanted to make sure.

“Yeah.” She smiled. “It’s been a while since I shook things up in the Greek community.”

I laughed and squeezed her hand.

Inside the house, Ruby wandered into the kitchen and started opening cupboards and drawers.

“What are you looking for?”

“Hmm?” She answered distractedly. “Nothing, really. Just looking.”

“Just being nosy?” I teased.

She arched her brow at me. “Did you not say this is my house? Am I not entitled to open the cupboards in my own house?”

I dipped my head to give her that point.

She smirked and turned her back to me.
