Dipping her head to Jace, she murmured, “Would you like to introduce me?”

Jace’s chest puffed out and he looked at me.

“This,” he indicated Minty, “is my Aunt Minnie. But only Alex and I call her Minnie, you can call her Minty.” He took a deep breath, and if possible, his chest puffed out further. “Minnie, this is my dad, but you can call him Vander.”

A smile teased the corners of her lips, and humor flashed behind her cool, brown eyes. Turning to me, she smiled politely. “It’s lovely to meet you, Vander.” She released my hand.

“Likewise.”

“I understand you’ve settled in the area?” Her eyes held a challenge.

I looked at her, slightly startled to discover a bit of a mama-bear. I found myself charmed. “Yes. I’m here for good. Unless, of course, Ruby moves, in which case I’ll be following her.”

Her face lost a bit of its coolness, and she gave me a more genuine smile. “That’s good to hear.”

Ruby bustled out from the back and Minty’s face warmed completely. What an interesting woman. Her man must have his hands full.

I took the boys next door, where Jace introduced me as his dad to Yanni and Elisavet.

“You’re his father?” Elisavet’s eyes darted back and forth between the two of us.

“I am,” I answered firmly.

“But-” She began, but Yanni interrupted.

“Of course, he is. Look at the boy. He look just like his father.”

Yanni extended his hand, and I shook it. “Welcome home, agori mou.”

It appeared Voula was not prone to gossip. Now that Elisavet knew, the entire Greek community would be caught up by lunchtime tomorrow.

Good.

Rip off the damn band-aid.

One more to go.
