I noticed the same thing but put it down to worrying about Ruby’s feelings for him. I squeezed her hand reassuringly. “I’ll check into that.”

Slowly, I became aware of our surroundings once again, the people walking and talking, eating and shopping, cuddled up in their jackets and hoodies in the cool October evening. The temperature had dropped since the day before.

“Okay.” Her body softened against my side.

I breathed a sigh of relief that I was finally able to explain how it was, for me, without her. I kissed the top of her head, and she chuckled.

“What are you laughing at?” I asked, looking down at her, bemused.

She lifted her chin to indicate the boys coming towards us from across the square. “They’re on a mission.”

They loped along, two messy, curly heads, hands in pockets, lips tipped up on one side. Jace scanned his surroundings, taking everything in. George’s gaze remained on Ruby, not Ruby and me together, just Ruby. Her face. Assessing. A ribbon of unease uncurled in my gut.

I looked at Ruby to see her smiling softly. “Well, Georgie? Do you think your snack earned you the right to pick the movie?”

He grinned easily and opened the bag to show her his selections.

She peeked in. “Damn,” she whispered, and George laughed.
