Chapter 47 – All Three, Always

Ruby

Saturday morning, I woke to the sound of a soft knock at my bedroom door.

“Come in, honey,” I called to Jace.

He poked his head in the door but came no further.

I realized this was the first time he’d ever seen a man in my bed, and it must be weird for him. I could feel Vander waking up behind me. I bumped him with my butt.

“Move back, buster.”

He chuckled low in his chest and shifted to give me more room.

I moved over and opened the covers to Jace. “Come cuddle for two minutes, agapimeno.”

His eyes skittered to Vander then back to me as he took a hesitant step in.

I smiled at him, and Vander spoke. “Come lie down for a minute, agori mou, and we’ll plan the day.”

Jace’s face broke into a smile. He ducked his head shyly, but jumped into our bed and cuddled in.

“We’re going to FaceTime Georgie soon…”

I cuddled my son in my arms, my lover’s warmth against my back, and closed my eyes to better hear the sweet sound of my son’s father making plans with him for our weekend.

Vander and Gus took the boys rock climbing, then met Amber and me back at Amber’s house for dinner.

On Sunday, Jace insisted that Vander come with us for breakfast and so we replaced an old tradition with a new one, one that would include Georgie when he visited.

Family dinner took place at Amber’s house where she and Gus stumbled around each other, trying to figure out their places in this new dynamic.

Late Sunday night when we were in bed, Vander brought up Spuds.

“I’ll go with you to Spuds tomorrow, but I need to take my own car.”

The heat of shame warmed my face. “I might be okay tomorrow…” Even as I said it my heart started pounding in my chest.

His big hand rubbed a slow circle over my back. “Just the same,” he murmured, “I think I’ll follow you in and work with you for a couple of hours. If you’re okay with it, I might run to the office to pick up some papers, but then I’ll be back.”

I sighed. “Vander…I can’t keep taking you away from your work.”

“The meeting on Friday, I didn’t tell you about it yet.”

“You said it was ‘informative’,” I teased.

He squeezed me and chuckled. “I approached my senior consultants a couple of weeks ago about buying me out. Friday night they accepted my offer.”

I swallowed hard. What did this mean for us? Where would he look for work?

“Ruby.” He gave me a little shake. “Don’t start freaking out.”

I narrowed my eyes at him. “Don’t tell me what to do.”

“Alright.” He lifted his head off the pillow to look at me. “Just listen to the rest.”

I nodded for him to continue.
