Amber helped Yiayia on with her dress, and Minty put the barest touches of make-up to her face. We got Yiayia a long-sleeve, gentle scoop neck, black velvet dress with an empire waist that hit her at her knee. We found a belt in the exact same shade of lavender to replace the belt that came with the dress.

“Yiayia, you look beautiful!”

I stood with my hands clasped to the side of my face, staring at all three of them. They were strong, kind, loyal, beautiful, and they were mine. For as long as God granted them time, they were mine.

“Your turn,” Minty said huskily while Amber swiped a finger beneath her eye.

Amber and Minty helped me step into my dress, and Minty made short work of the buttons going up the back.

“Do not let him rip this,” she directed me firmly.

Amber laughed, but Minty continued seriously. “In fact, I’ll tell him myself.”

I laughed knowing she would.

They stepped back and Amber turned the full-length mirror Minty brought over from her house so I could see myself.

I stared, speechless, at my reflection.

“You clean up good, kid,” Minty whispered.

“Yiayia is very proud!” Yiayia sniffed, and Amber and I burst out laughing.

“This would be a good time to show her your shoes, Rubes,” Amber snickered.

Minty opened the shoebox to reveal my rich lavender heels. They were the highest heels I’d ever worn, and I’d been practicing for a month. By this point, I could run in them.

“Purple?” Yiayia did her cross over her chest. “What I’m going to do with you? Purple shoes in the church!”

Amber slid the other boxes towards Minty and Minty smiled her enigmatic smile. She knew her role in this.

Opening all three lids, she slipped hers on first, then passed Amber her pair which she promptly put on, then turned to Yiayia.

“These ones are for you, Yiayia.” She lifted out a very low-heeled, classy pump in the exact shade of lavender as ours.

Yiayia’s eyes lit up. She always loved a good shoe. “We gonna be matching!”

Minty laughed her tinkling laugh and helped her put them on.

At that moment, Jace opened the door and walked in.

My heart stopped. Despite my threats of powder blue, then lavender, then pink tuxedos, we chose classic black for all the men to wear.

Gus, Alex, Jace, and George were in the wedding party.

Gus and Amber accepted the role of koumbari and would both be active participants during the wedding ceremony.

Minty would stand as my maid of honor.

Jace would walk me down the aisle, then take his position next to his dad and his brother on the altar.

It was a little unorthodox, with Jace doing double duty, but with the way we finally came together, how could it not be?

“Yiayia is very proud!” The tears were thick in her voice, and we all sniffed.

“You will not ruin your make-up, Ruby,” Minty said softly but firmly, and Yiayia laughed.

The limo pulled up outside.
