I felt the exact moment she got scared. Her body stiffened and she pulled away, laughing nervously. “Wow. Maybe we should get going.”

I looked pointedly, for a brief moment, at my groin. “I’m going to need a moment, Ruby.”

Her eyes widened and then heated. “Really?” she breathed. She leaned over and looked at my groin.

I snorted. “Of course. My God, I haven’t touched a woman in years, and you are not just any woman.”

“How many years, Vander?” She suddenly appeared completely sober.

“I don’t know, Ruby. Many. Do you really want to have this conversation? Is it really relevant?”

“I think I’d just like to know all the ways you continued living your life when you left me behind, that’s all,” she spat out.

I knew this conversation was overdue, but this was not the place for it. I don’t even know why I said anything about other women, other than the aching drive inside me to drag all our shit out into the open and push her to communicate. Some small part of me thought my abstinence might convince her that I only wanted her.

“Let’s continue this conversation in the car, Ruby-mine,” I spoke firmly. It was more than safe for me to get up, there was no longer anything to hide.

On the way to the car, I kept her hand firmly tucked into the crook of my arm. Her body vibrated with emotion. I bought that a decade ago, I knew I did, but I wasn’t looking forward to it. More than anything, I didn’t want to say the wrong thing. All I could do was be honest and let the chips fall.

Lack of communication had always been our downfall.
