I bent down and looked at him. His dark eyes held light and hope, while mine were dark and dull. “I can’t answer that question right now, Vander.”

He took a steadying breath but held my gaze. “That’s okay, Ruby-mine. We’ve got all the time in the world.”

I froze, staring at him.

That was patently untrue.

Things happened unexpectedly all the time.

“Are you tired? Are you okay to drive?”

His eyes skittered between mine. “Of course, I’m okay to drive.”

“How far away is your house?”

I looked at my watch, then looked out at the street.

What if I never saw him again?

How could I leave it like this?

“What’s going on right now, Ruby?”

I bent back down to look at his handsome face. “I’m scared something is going to happen to you.” I placed my palm over his cross. Suddenly I wanted him to wear it. I started to tug it over my head.

“What are you doing?” Exasperation, confusion, alarm, I could hear all of it in his voice.

“I want you to wear this and text me when you get home.”

He laughed. “I’m not taking it. We’ve covered this subject before.”

I stopped fumbling and narrowed my eyes at him. “Don’t laugh at me,” I snapped.

His face grew serious and stern. “I’m not laughing at you, Ruby. I’m just trying to keep up with your thoughts and emotions.”

“Maybe I’ll prove to be too much for you,” I sniped at him.

He leaned towards me slightly. “Try me,” he retorted. “And I’ll show you just how well I can handle you.”

He gave me a heated look, and I huffed in disbelief.

“Give me a kiss, then go into the house and lock up,” he demanded. “I will text you when I’m home.”

My eyes bugged out of my head, and the corner of his mouth curled up. I stood up straight and drummed my fingers on the roof of the car. That bitch, ‘What if’, spun her stories in my head. I couldn’t leave him like this.

I bent down and crawled across the seat until we were face-to-face, a handful of inches between us. He remained still, watching me, his gaze steady.

Even as I watched, his mouth softened, and the deeply etched lines around his mouth eased.

I did that. I did that for him.

I inhaled, filling my lungs with the heady scent of ouzo and his aftershave.

“I do love you, Vander,” I said with a soft sigh.

“I love you, too, Ruby-mine,” he murmured.

I grasped his wrists, so he couldn’t prolong the kiss, and gently pressed my mouth to his, unmoving. One breath, two, sharing air, coming home. I inhaled deeply, the oxygen seeming to go straight to my head. I could stay linked to him like this forever.
