Chapter 21 – Emoji Man

Ruby

Sunday morning, I woke bleary-eyed and exhausted with an emotional hangover. A soft knock sounded at my door.

“Come in,” I called.

Jace stuck his head in the door. “Hey, Momma. How did the meeting go?”

I lifted my arm in invitation and he jumped into the bed beside me, tucking his head onto my shoulder.

“Good, pouli mou.” I stroked his unruly curls back from his face.

“You going to do it?” He asked curiously.

“Maybe not with that company. I’m going to call the other one and see what they say.”

“Yiayia said you were out with a friend last night.”

I stiffened, then cleared my throat. “The man who took me to the meeting is someone I used to know in university a long time ago.”

“Yiayia said he used to be important to you a long time ago.”

Frigging Yiayia.

“He was.”

I always strived to be honest with Jace. I never wanted to break his faith in me. I scratched his scalp lightly.

“Is he still?”

Jace sounded curious, not worried, but I wanted to be sure. I blew out a breath. “Would it bother you if he was?”

“I don’t know,” he answered honestly. “Is he a good man?”

I nodded firmly. “He is. He is the best kind of man. Kind, sweet, hard-working, an excellent father…”

At this I felt Jace go rigid. “He has kids?”

I continued to stroke his hair and kissed the top of his forehead. “One. A boy a couple of years older than you.”

Jace sat up and looked at me. “So… if you guys got married, I’d have a brother?”

I laughed out loud. “Jace, we haven’t even been on a proper date, and you’re marrying me off? You want a brother that badly?”

“No, I have Alex,” he answered seriously. “But I’m growing up and I don’t want you to be alone.” He paused. “Can I meet him?”

I chuckled nervously. “You want to check him out? See if he’s good enough?”

“Yup,” he agreed.

I thought about it. “Let’s just see what happens over the next little while, and if I think it’s necessary, I’ll introduce you.”

“Okay, momma. Are we still going out for breakfast?”

Sundays were my only guaranteed day off, so Jace and I usually went out for breakfast before heading to the pet store to stock up on whatever he needed for his fish tank. It was our ‘catching up on Jace’s life and making plans for the week ahead’ time.

“Yeah, moro mou. Give me twenty minutes.”
