Ruby: You did not just say that.

Vander: I did, and I will. Be warned.

Ruby: You’re threatening me with battery?

Vander: You’ll love every second of it.

I squirmed in my seat, noticing the dampness in my panties.

Ruby: I’m buying a vibrator.

Vander: I’ll go with you. We’ll buy lots of toys.

“Hey, momma.”

I tossed my phone straight up in the air. Jace reached out and caught it before handing it back to me. “You okay, momma? Your face is kind of red.”

“I’m good, agapimeno mou,” I gasped. Shitfuckdamn! “You just startled me.” Quick, change the subject. “What are you going to order? How much did you eat back there?”

One side of his mouth tipped up in a mischievous smile. “I told Maria I wouldn’t order breakfast if she made me eat all four desserts, so she said I had to take one bite of each and take the rest home.” He poked the Styrofoam container on the table between us and smiled.

My cell phone buzzed in my hand and Jace looked at it quizzically. “One minute, agori mou.”

Vander: Ruby?

Ruby: Jace is here. Talk later.

He sent a heart and I barely held in my laugh. I never would have pegged Vander for an emoji man.

I rested my elbows on the table and tuned in to my son. “Give me all your news, agapimeno.”

His dark eyes skittered across my face. “I have some forms for the Adventure Club.”

I fought to hide my trepidation. “Oh, yeah? Permission forms?”

“Yup!” He smiled, relieved. “There are two options. You can sign a separate permission form for each field trip, or a blanket permission form for all of them.”

My eyes bugged out of my head. “A blanket permission form? Are you crazy?”

Jace’s dark eyes sparkled with humor, and he laughed. “I knew you’d react like that! I got the individual forms.”

I nodded emphatically and huffed. “A blanket form!” I exclaimed, shaking my head in disbelief. I threw out my arm in a sweeping invitation. “Here, take my son anywhere you want. Helicopter tour? Sure! Tree-trekking? Why not! Bungee-jumping? Sounds good! Cliff-diving? Make sure you take one last picture of him before he jumps!”

Jace wrapped his arms around his skinny belly and leaned towards me over the table, his face split wide with his laughter. He enjoyed making me squirm.

“I love you, Momma.”

I smiled back at him and reached for his hand across the table. Even his hands were starting to feel different. My little boy was growing up and grabbing life by the horns. Though the anxiety crippled me, I needed to ensure I stayed out of his way.
