“Why you don’t go with Vander’s company?”

My mouth fell open in surprise. “How do you know what Vander does?” I passed her the dishtowel to dry her hands.

She smiled sneakily and folded the dishtowel over the sink. “Elisavet. She has the internet. We look him up on the lap pad.”

“Elisavet uses the internet?” I raised my eyebrows. “Good for her!”

“Ach, she talk too much, work too little.”

I snorted out a laugh. “You jealous, Yiayia? You want an iPad for yourself? I have one you can have.”

She turned and patted my cheek. The top of her head only came to my nose. We used to be the same height.

“I don’t know, poulaki mou. I’m happy with my cell phone. Tell me about Vander.”

I sighed. “I don’t know what to tell you, Yiayia. He wants to be together, and I just don’t know if I can, at least,” I held up my hand to stop the torrent of words poised on her lips, “not right now.”

“You still love him, poulaki mou,” she stated. She pulled out the cutting boards and placed one in front of each of us.

I sighed again, deeper, then admitted, “I will always love him, Yiayia. I will never love another, but I can’t handle seeing his back again.”

“You think he walk away again?” She asked incredulously.

I held my hands out to my sides. “What, in the past twenty years, has he done to prove otherwise?”

“He move his business all the way across the country, psychi mou,” she peered at me seriously, her eyes concerned.

“How do you know that?” I asked, exasperated.

She grinned. “Elisavet.”

I groaned and pulled out the knife to slice the eggplant. “What are we making, moussaka or melitzanosalata?”

“I make Amber moussaka, poulaki mou.”

I threw my arm around her shoulders, suddenly feeling sorry for my sister. She didn’t seem right lately.

“How about we make roast beef as well? We’ll have a regular feast today.”

Her eyes lit up. “Good idea. Jace, he look skinny lately.”

Amber and Alex arrived shortly afterwards. Amber’s face went a little green when she caught sight of the piles of fried eggplant, making me happy I suggested roast beef.

Yiayia sent us out of the kitchen to ‘have rest’, and I settled with Amber on the front step.

I bumped her lightly with my shoulder. “How are you?”

She gazed off into the distance, her arms wrapped around her bent legs. “I don’t really know, Ruby.” She turned her head and studied me. “How about you? How is it with Vander back on the scene?”

Other than a brief phone call to bring her up to date, we hadn’t spoken about Vander.

I shrugged. “I don’t know. He wants to be together.”

“Yeah?” Her pretty mouth twisted. “He going to stay this time?”

I flinched. “I guess that’s the million-dollar question, isn’t it?”

She blew out a breath. “I’m sorry. That was uncalled for. The man moved his entire life across the country. I’m thinking he’s committed.”
