Ruby: It was good.
Vander: Details.
Ruby: You want to know?
I snorted. For fuck’s sake.
Vander: Yeah, Ruby. I want to know everything.
Ruby: I can hear your snark.
That made me laugh. God, I loved her.
Vander: I’ll dial it back. I want to know. I want to know about your life, your family, your son. I want to know everything.
Ruby: We had dinner with Amber and my nephew, Alex. Alex doesn’t like to do homework and Yiayia hounds him about it. Jace and Alex discovered that they could distract her by asking for more food or complimenting her cooking. Jace ate a mountainous pile of salad for his perfidy.
Vander: He asked for salad?
Ruby: Yup. With all the offerings on the table, he panic-asked for salad. Poor kid.
Vander: And did it work?
Ruby: For them, yes. Amber and I tried it when she started questioning me about you, but it didn’t work for us. Yiayia was onto them the whole time, but she took the loss in exchange for the food win.
Vander: I miss my yiayia.
Ruby: She passed?
Vander: Long time ago.
Ruby: Your parents are okay?
My parents loved Ruby, and they were almost as devastated as I was when she dropped out of school. They gave me the money to fly out to see her and had encouraged me to go to her for the summer. My mother told me, more than once, there was more going on.
Fuck me. Forget listening to my heart, I should have just listened to my mom.
Vander: They’re good. Retired now and spending half the year at their home in Greece. I’ll take you. You and Jace and Georgie.
Ruby: You’re getting ahead of yourself.
Vander: I’m two decades behind.
Her dots appeared and disappeared a few times. I hoped she didn’t start with all the reasons she couldn’t be with me.
Ruby: Tell me about Georgie.
I blew out a breath, surprised and relieved at the turn in the conversation.
Vander: Tell you what: we’ll take turns asking questions and we’ll both answer them so I can get to know Jace, too.
Ruby: Why?
Vander: Because he’s yours. And you’re mine, I thought. But first, you were telling me what Yiayia was saying about me.
Ruby: Was I?
Vander: You were. Just tell me one thing: Is she for me or against me?
