Ruby’s dots appeared and disappeared once again while she decided how to respond.

Ruby: For you. How old is George?

I grinned. I’d add a visit to Yiayia to tomorrow’s agenda.

Vander: George turned 13 on March 9th. How old is Jace?

Ruby: He’ll be 11 on December 16th.

I was gratified that she finally showed an interest in Georgie. The boys had a love of skateboarding and video games in common. I brainstormed ideas for things to do with the boys together. I wondered if Jace would like to try rock climbing at the indoor facility where I trained.

Vander: When should I meet Jace?

Ruby: Vander, I don’t know if I can do this. You tie me up in knots. This relationship is unbalanced, and I don’t want to be the one who is more invested.

Vander: Our relationship is a knot. It’s a fucking mess. I realize this and I’m going to sort it out. You’re not more invested. If anything, I’m more invested. I moved my entire life here based on nothing more than a dream. I didn’t even know you were single when I picked up and moved, just on the off chance that there might be an opportunity for us sometime in the future. I’m not going anywhere.

Fifteen agonizing minutes passed while I waited for her reply.

Ruby: I’ll see you tomorrow?

My cheeks filled up with air and I blew it out forcefully. Longest fifteen minutes of my life.

Vander: Yeah, koukla. You’ll see me tomorrow.

Ruby: Goodnight, Vander.

Vander: Goodnight, Ruby-mine. I love you.

Dots, no dots, dots, no dots, dots…

Ruby: I love you, too.

Fuck, that felt good. Feet back up on the railing, I leaned back in my chair and took a long pull of my beer. Two nights in a row. We were making progress. I thought back to the taste and feel of her lips, and re-read our texts from the evening, committing all I learned about Jace to memory.

It was a good night.
