I winced and acquiesced. “I should have been here.”

“Yes, but you wasn’t. I was. Amber was. We watch her fall apart and we pick up all the pieces.”

“If I had known, I would have come.”

She nodded and pain flashed across her wrinkled face. “I should have found a way to call you.”

Ah, fuck. That’s not what I meant. I patted her little hand. “No, Yiayia, this was not your fault.”

She shook my hand off and carried on, undaunted. “What about the second time? You were here the second time?”

“I couldn’t.”

She jammed her finger down on the table to make her point. “You could. You made a choice.” She shrugged her shoulders and sat back. “The right choice, but still was your choice. Did you see her that time when you walk away? No. Who see her fall apart? I see her. I pick up the pieces. She don’t know what she need. I do. You know, too. You listen to her, you won’t even be here.”

That was the difference.

It was so simple, really, I had to, at the very least, be here. Had I transferred when we were in university, I would have learned what held her back. Had I traveled to visit her after the conference, had I been here, Jace would have been mine.

I nodded to Yiayia. “I’ll be here on Sunday.”

She nodded in approval. “Good boy. You ate the donkey, only the tail is left. Is not the time to lose your appetite.” She stood and turned to the fridge. “Now. I make you a roast beef sandwich, then you get out of here before Jace come home and see you.” She shuddered dramatically and twinkled at me conspiratorially. “Ruby will make me like the onions.”
