I hoped Lucky wouldn’t go all caveman on me for wanting to buy things. My eyebrows knit together. If it was going to be my home, too, I should be allowed to add my touch.

Truthfully, all it needed was bookshelves. Maybe a new kitchen table.

I looked around the backyard. Lucky’s neighborhood was quieter, yet, I felt the proximity of his neighbors. At my place, once the businesses downstairs closed, I was really quite isolated.

“You having a good conversation over there?”

Lucky sat on the grass, leaning back on his hands, a soft smile on his face. “I’m redecorating.”

“Sparky!” Brayleigh began to make her way over to me, but my eyes were locked on Lucky’s wide, hopeful ones.

He looked away for a moment, staring up at the sky, then looked back, his eyebrows raised. His voice was husky when he spoke. “You decided?”

I held his gaze. “I want to. It has to be on my timeline.”

He jumped to his feet, and I continued in a rush. “I can’t be hurried. And I’m not sure of all the details...”

He pulled me to my feet and pressed his forehead to mine. “Progress is progress. As fast or as slow as you want. I couldn’t be happier.”

I released my held breath. “Okay.” I nodded. “Okay.”

His smile warmed my heart and I mentally high-fived the woman in the mirror.

“Love you, my baby,” he murmured.

“Love you, Captain.”

“Love me?”

Lucky’s dimples flashed as he scooped up his little woman and sandwiched her between us.

“Love you, too,” I murmured.

Lucky's eyes misted and he swallowed hard.

“Only you, Minty. My first and only love.”

Chapter Forty - Checking

Minty

Her chubby finger pointed to the door. “Go, Da!”

Lucky slapped his palm to his chest in mock injury. “A shot to the heart! She ditched me for Sparky.”

“It’ll be short-lived. A daddy’s girl is always a daddy’s girl,” I assured him. “I’m a novelty.”

“No,” he sighed dramatically. “It’s the beginning of the end. First, I lose her to you. Then to some undeserving man.”

“How do you know he’ll be undeserving?” I teased.

“Because the truth is we’re all undeserving.” He grinned. “It’s society’s best kept secret.”

I smirked. “It’s not that well-kept.”

He grabbed his chest again. “And the hits just keep on coming!”

“Da!” Brayleigh frowned and pointed to the door. “Go!”
