Music opened doors inside me like nothing else could. It allowed me to feel, to cry, to dream, to breathe.

It stimulated my brain in ways that left me relaxed and offered me a reprieve.

Lucky reached out a long, lean finger and touched Rena’s tiny ear.

“It seems a shame to touch this perfect skin with these calloused fingers,” he murmured.

You can touch mine.

I felt my face flush. No man had affected me like this in years. I searched my memory for the last one who elicited this type of reaction. Just as I suspected, there was only one.

“I won’t ask to hold her today,” he said to Willa. “She looks too comfortable nestled up against Minty. I’ll wait and come visit you at home in a couple of weeks.”

The clock on the wall showed that it was nearing six o’clock and there had been visitors for the past few hours. It was time to go.

I stood and nestled Rena back inside the cradle of her mother’s loving arms. Saying our goodbyes, Lucky followed me out of Willa and Barrett’s room.

Lucky rested his fingers lightly at the small of my back. “Have you eaten yet?”

“No. Not yet.”

“Would you like to grab some dinner with me?”

I blew out a quick breath. Spontaneous changes in plan were not my strong suit.

I looked up to find his eyes on me. Waiting. Assessing.

“I’m kind of a fussy eater,” I admitted. “Would it be okay with you if I picked the restaurant?”

He shrugged. “Works for me. It’s not vegan, is it?” he joked.

I smiled guiltily, and he slapped a hand over his heart. “You’re killing me,” he groused, laughing. “Alright. Let this be a testament to my interest in you that I’m willing to visit the dark side.”

“You’re that interested, hm?” I teased, beginning to feel my feet under me.

“I am,” he readily admitted with a smile.

“Well, if we get to know each other better and we decide to go out and eat again, I’ll take you to Spuds. My best friend owns it, and you can get all the meat you want.”

“Will I also get grilled by your friend?”

I groaned. “You did not just make a punny.”

He laughed. “I did.” He nodded and pressed his lips together tightly in mock apology. “However, I also play electric guitar in a rock band which I hope is enough to balance out my dorky side.” He held up a finger as if he just remembered something. “And I have abs.”

I laughed out loud. “Certainly, a good set of abs covers a multitude of sins.” I glanced up at his smiling face, his dimples a mere tease. “I do not have abs. I feel it’s only fair to let you know considering we are revealing our innermost secrets.”

He smiled bigger, his dimples deeper. “I’m definitely down with that. I prefer my women soft.”

“Hm. And how many women do you have?”

“One at a time,” he answered quickly.

I laughed again. “You answered rather quickly. Did you practice?”

He huffed out a laugh in response.

“I sense there’s a story there,” I prodded.
