“No. The schools in wealthier neighborhoods have more because parents and kids can participate in fundraisers and raffles and such. Schools in impoverished areas don’t have that option, those families are just trying to swing lunch for their kids.”

“What school do you work at- actually, how old are you, Lucky?” Perhaps it was time to inject a small dose of reality.

He leaned his elbows on the table and looked at me steadily, his grey eyes heating even as I watched. “I’m all grown up, Minty.”

Despite the lightning bolt of desire his answer sent straight to my clit, I pushed further. “Are you going to ask me how old I am?”

He sat back and took a swig of his beer, placing it back on the table before answering. “Third date.”

At least he was aware there was an age gap. Perhaps it didn’t matter for his purposes. If we were just having a good time, and he wasn’t looking for ‘the one’, someone to start a family with, age was just a number.

I ate a few more fries and Lucky plowed through the rest. Our server packed up my leftover salad to go.

On the way to the car, Lucky interlaced his long fingers with mine, his thumb gently caressing the outside of mine. He released my hand in the car but picked it up again as he walked me up the stairs to my door. There, he turned to face me.

I looked at him. Considering.

My body was ready. My heart still neatly detached. It wouldn’t be a terrible way to wile away the rest of the afternoon. Perhaps I could ditch my rules for dating and dip my toes into Lucky’s pool of hook-ups.

The thought left a bitter taste in my mouth. I didn’t want to be one of his many hook-ups.

He stepped into my space and cupped my jaw between his palms, his calloused fingertips caressing the tender skin under my ears as he studied me.

Conflicting thoughts and feelings flickered across his face so rapidly I couldn’t even attempt to read him.

Finally, he seemed to come to a decision and huffed out a short laugh. “The only thing I want more than to be invited in is a third date.”

My chest inflated with my deep inhale and my hands came up to wrap around his wrists. It had been so long since I’d been wanted, so long since I’d wanted someone like this.

His eyes darkened. “Will you go out with me again?”

“I’d like that,” I replied softly.

Smiling, his lips met mine with the softest of touches before kissing me firmly on the forehead and heading to his car.

I watched him.

At his car door, he looked back, and smiled.

Chapter Ten – Plans

Minty

Junie dropped her pen on her desk and spun round in her chair with a dramatic flourish. “Done! Let’s close up and go to Willa’s.”

I tilted my head to the side, wondering if it was too soon to be landing on her. “It’s barely been a week. Don’t you think it’s too soon to drop in?”

“Nope.” Junie’s lips popped on the word as she tidied her desk space.“Barrett went back to work today.Let’s call her and see if she wants company. Doesn’t hurt to check in.”

Forty-five minutes later, after a quick trip to the grocery store and a pitstop at Tim Horton’s, Willa met us at the door with her finger over her lips telling us to be quiet.

Junie passed her a coffee from Tim Horton’s.

“I swear to God, Junie, if there’s no caffeine in here, I won’t be held responsible for my actions.”

Junie held up her hands. “Caffeinated. Promise.”

Willa closed her eyes and took her first sip while still standing in the open doorway.
