It was foolish of me to give so much of myself so soon. Obviously, Lucky and Hope had something special, even if he could not yet see it. Hopefully, he would.

Because if you have that kind of love, you should hang onto it. Some people never find it. That is the cold, hard truth.

My breath released with a sob.

I had much to be grateful for, but just for tonight, I would allow myself to cry for what I yearned for.

With my legs pulled up tight, I wrapped my arms around my shins and rested my forehead on my bent knees.

I drifted off only to be awakened by knocking at my door.

Jumping to my feet, I ran to the alarm panel. Had I set it? I checked. It was armed.

Are you sure?

I looked again. I looked hard. Armed. A-R-M-E-D. Armed. Disoriented from sleep and logy from crying, my brain struggled to make sense of the world around me.

Are you sure?

I took a deep breath.

Don’t check.

The risk is too great.

The pounding at the door began again.

I checked the panel.

Armed.

I looked out the window.

Bus.

Safe travels.

Pounding at the door.

I crossed to the door and slid down to the floor, my back pressed against it, lending my weight to keep it closed.

“Minty?” A man’s voice yelled through the door.

My heart jumped to my throat, and I screamed.

“Minty! Are you okay? Open the goddamn door!”

I covered my pounding heart with the palm of my hand and pushed myself to my feet. My hand shook. I turned the knob and pulled open the door.

Immediately, the screech of the alarm went off. I stumbled backwards and slapped my hands over my ears. “Oh, God!”

Crossing to the alarm panel, I punched in the code. Got it wrong. My whole body shook.

Lucky aligned his body behind me, his arm wrapped around my waist, his mouth at my ear. “What’s the code, baby? I’ll put it in.”

I gave it to him, watched him punch it in, and sagged back against his chest as silence reigned once more.

He turned me to the side, then bent and scooped me up in his arms.
