Her gaze sharpened. “Is everything okay? Listen, Minty. I don’t want you settling for less than you deserve.” She shook her head, white-blond hair flying. “I know we warned you about him, and maybe we should have, maybe we shouldn’t have, but don’t take any shit, okay?”

I took a breath. “Junie, it’s possible that the reason we had a misunderstanding is partially because I keep waiting for him to fuck up.”

Her eyes widened at my use of the expletive. In general, I had to be pretty upset before I resorted to curse words.

“Thus far, he and I have had two fights, both of them due to me thinking he was being a dog, and both times I was wrong. It was an insult to him.”

Junie opened her mouth to continue but I forestalled her with a raised hand.

“He has assured me that he will not hurt me, that he will be honest with me, and that we are exclusive. Now, saying all that, do you have any reason to believe he would lie?”

“No.” She shook her head immediately. “He’s a good guy.”

My shoulders dropped and I rolled the tension from my neck. “Then let us assume going forward that he will be a good guy and not jerk me around.”

‘Yes, ma’am,” Junie smiled softly. She spun around to her desk, then turned back. “I’m happy, you know. Happier for him, maybe,” she winked, “but I’m happy for you, too. I’m sorry if my warnings contributed to your fights. It won’t happen again.”

“Thank you, beautiful.”

I picked up my cell and tapped out a message to Lucky.

Several minutes later he responded with celebration emojis. In the next line he wrote,You’re the best. I cannot believe this is happening. You’ve made me so happy. The third line contained more emojis.

“Junie, what does a tongue, a cat, water droplets, an eggplant, and a waterfall mean?”

Junie barked out a laugh. “It means he’s going to lick your pussy until you come then fuck you so hard you explode.”

“Oh!” I laughed. “I shouldn’t have asked.”

Junie lifted her coffee cup in a toast. “I’m glad you did.” Turning back to her desk, she teased, “Somebody’s in for a good night!”

The musical instruments were next on my list, but unfortunately, those would have to wait until next year.

Unless they were donated.

I sat up straight in my chair. Rich people loved to dabble in different hobbies. They picked things up and discarded them just as quickly. Relaxing back, I sent a brief email to Amber, then several more to the committee ladies who enjoyed dabbling in local charities in addition to their larger commitments.

These instruments would not be for the school, they’d go directly to the students. I could store them in the basement of the house. Have them refurbished, tuned, and ready to go.

There were bound to be a lot of flutes. Maybe those could go to the school.

My spine shot straight up. A wish list. Online. Students could fill them out, indicating where their interests lie. Cameras! Cameras were another luxury item often out of reach for many families.

I’d have to go through the parent committee. The committee would set up the program, but the donations could come from anywhere.

The girls at the house who were currently floating, this could be their project. I sat back in my chair. I wonder if they, too, could benefit from a program like this.

“Are you done?” Junie asked drily.

Startled, I swung my gaze to her amused face. “Pardon me?”

“You’re thinking so loud it’s hurting my ears.” She laughed. “What’s going on?”

I smiled widely, and Junie’s face broke into a grin.

“Two pet projects I had for fundraising for George’s school just came through!”

I went on to explain the issues, watched her face fall the same way mine did when I heard about the underwear, then told her about the measures we had come up with to fill in part of the gap.
