“Okay, darling,” I breathed, fear of the fall tightening my grip on him.

His heart beat steady against my palm as he pressed his forehead to mine, the painstaking sweetness of his claiming a balm to my soul.

I lifted my mouth to his, tipped my hips to take him deeper, and undulated against him.

Tugging my leg up over his hip, he continued his steady assault, rocking slowly and deeply inside me, pushing me up, up, up, then watching as I floated over the edge, surrendering to the wonder of it all.

Fusing his mouth to mine, his thumbs sweeping away my tears of release, he quickened his pace, his entire body releasing inside me, a great sigh of relief.

“Minty.”

My name the only word on his lips as he rolled me onto my side, curled himself around my back, and pressed his mouth to the nape of my neck.

Lucky

We spent most of the week together, and I couldn’t believe how far we’d come in just a few short days.

On Friday I took her out to see the movie we missed previously, and all day Saturday we hung out around the house. I completed my yardwork while Minty worked on an art commission. When I finished, I pulled out my guitar while Minty continued.

At times she paused and watched my hands as I played.

I could see her canvas from where I sat and I watched her hand fly across the empty space, slowly filling it with life.

Tonight, we did not have a show or a rehearsal. It was the last free weekend before the summer schedule picked up.

I was not one bit sorry to have that time with her.

She stretched, her back popping as she twisted out the knots, and moved to lie beside me on the double lounge chair.

“You okay if I read for a while? Or is there something you want to do?” she asked.

“You couldn’t get me out of this seat with a crowbar,” I assured her.

Satisfied, she settled in and opened her kindle.

I glanced down. Was she reading about alien sex? I contained my laughter. One hundred percent I planned to get an alien costume and chase her around the house with my dick hanging out.

Over the past few weeks, I’d laughed more than I could ever remember laughing. And I generally laughed a lot. I was a happy guy.

But Minty? She catapulted my happiness to a higher level.

I tucked her close to my side and stretched my legs out to rest my bare feet beside hers.

A cool breeze provided a welcome relief to the heat of the sun, and I drifted off to sleep, perfectly content.

“Lucky,” Minty called softly, shaking me awake. “Darling, you need to go pick up the baby.”

I rubbed my hand over my face, then nuzzled into her neck. “Thanks for waking me.” I lifted my chin to catch her smiling at me. “Why don’t you come with me? Break the ice.”

Her smile faded. Uncertainty clouded her eyes.

“Not this time.” She smiled apologetically, then closed her eyes for a quick moment, her brows knitting. “I’ll get over it. I promise. While you’re gone, I’ll make dinner. This way we’ll have time to take the baby to the park.”

I managed a smile, but I worried about the sudden separation of the important people in my life. “You drive a hard bargain,” I teased, hoping to alleviate the sudden weight in the atmosphere.

Pushing myself up, I dropped a kiss on her nose, and headed off.

When Hope opened her front door, she looked for Minty in the car. Noting her absence, she gave me a knowing look, her sadness apparent.
