Tightness in my jaw alerted me to the fact my teeth were grinding. I relaxed my jaw and my brow. These were small things. A relationship with Lucky did not mean I had to give up clear counters.

Although, compromises would have to be made. By both of us.

If things continued with us, would he want me to move in with him? Did I want that?

I’d worked so hard to create a comfortable space.

I pushed the thought away. It was too soon. Too soon to even think about it.

My brain threw up obstacles left and right, but my heart had charted its course back in October when I first met him. I feared I was too far gone to pull back now.

It was too soon for declarations of love, and I couldn’t think about what it might mean for me if he didn’t feel the same. It’s one thing to dedicate a song tongue-in-cheek and quite another to declare yourself. I pushed the thoughts aside.

Even good decisions brought consequences, and these musings were mine.

I embraced them.

Junie and I closed the office, and I went to Spuds to have lunch with Ruby and Vander.

Then I packed a bag and headed over to Lucky’s place for the weekend.

Chapter Twenty-Nine - Fuck-Me Heels

Minty

I lay back on the lounge chair in Lucky’s backyard, a sparkling water in my hand.

The sound of Lucky’s fingers lazily plucking the strings of his guitar mixed with the breeze, the birds, and the sound of children laughing two yards over.

I filled my lungs with warm, fragrant, summer air.

“I could get used to this,” I murmured.

He smiled, his eyes warm. “I want you to get used to this.”

His words sent a giddy warmth spiraling through my stomach.

I tipped my head back and closed my eyes. I could only take so much of his tender attention. Like a sudden bright light coming on in the dark, I struggled to acclimatize myself to his open adoration.

When I walked into Lucky’s house Thursday afternoon, Brayleigh greeted me with a smile and her ‘Pinwin’.

Lucky stood behind her in bare feet and ripped jeans with his hands tucked loosely into his back pockets and his deep dimples on display.

I laughed. “You look delicious.”

He plucked his hands out of his pockets and raised his eyebrows as he headed toward me, stepping around Brayleigh’s small form and cupping his hands around my face. He tipped his chin down and smiled.

“Good enough to eat?” His eyes widened. “Shit! I did not just ask you for a blow job!”

I huffed out a small laugh and answered, “Definitely good enough to eat.” I offered my mouth for a kiss.

He moved in but was interrupted by a tinny, high-pitched voice from the vicinity of his thighs.

“I has bow job, too?”

Lucky’s face fell. “Fuck me,” he breathed.

I snorted as I slapped my hand over his mouth. “For Pete’s sake, Captain, stop talking!”
