My eyes met Mouse's. I saw the beginning of understanding there. The beginning of a broken heart. Mine was just as shattered for her. So quick, though, was my Mimi to assess a situation. So terribly intelligent. So impossibly perfect.

"It's time travel, Doctor," Carrie said. "Nothing is ever for forever for those who surf Time's waves."

She had a point. Despite Time's insistence — and it would insist, I knew that now — that the Wyldes go back to the 21st century, Mimi would be able to call on them from time to time. Brief visits wouldn't be outside the rules. Time would allow it. Because the Wyldes knew what Mimi knew, so she couldn't pollute their time with out-of-time facts.

It wasn't perfect. But it was doable.

"I'll be right back," I told Mouse.

"It's okay," she said, tears falling softly now. "I'll be alright."

"Of course you will," Carolyn insisted. "You're a Wylde."

And never a truer statement had been said. I nodded to Carrie, shared a brief look of understanding between the Wylde parents and myself, and then went to corral RATS' people.Mypeople now.

I was Deputy Chief Surgeon, and I knew Clive Crawford well.

By the time this was all over and done with, the 'Deputy' part of my title would be wiped as surely as Sergei's history was wiped by his beloved Mother Russia.

It was a new dawn at RATS, and thankfully, Time was whole and well. We weren't, though; not so much. We were battered and bruised and had gaps in our ranks. But finally, I could see the light at the end of the tunnel. And it was bright.

Finally, I could see the future stretching out before me, stretching out to the horizon and beyond it. And in it, a miraculous gift of Time was standing right at my side.

My Mimi. My Mouse. My life.
