"Well," the guard began.

"Bryan," I whined. "You promised."

"I did, didn't I, sweetheart?" He leaned down and kissed me. I was so shocked, I let him.

"Ah, alright then. But she stays in your room," the Idiot said.

"Not gonna let her out of my sight," Bryan mumbled, eyes all for me as we walked past.

He unlocked his door, and we stumbled inside his room, my eyes looking down the corridor two doors to Jack. The door shut behind us. Bryan turned the key in the lock, then he leaned back against it and let out a weighted breath of air in relief.

"You sure do play hard to get, princess," he said.

The pillow was handy, so I threw it at his head instead of commenting on that.

The walls might well have ears after all, and the mission had started. What it would end up being, I didn't know. But I did know I was closer to Jack than I had been for days, and I had Fawkes and his handsy hands to thank for it.
