“Yeah. So I’ll know you can’t use it again.”

I pulled the cell phone away from my ear and hit theendbutton.

I only wished I could hitendon my marriage just as easily.

Atext message appeared on my cell phone while I was typing up a report in my cubicle.I glanced down at it and tried not to suck in an angry breath of air.

You’ve still got my suitcase. I want it for this weekend. I’ll be home at four.

My hand hovered over the reply button.

Then I snatched up the phone and frantically tapped out an answer.

You’ve still got my dad’s FlyMo. Have it ready when I drop off the bag.

I placed the phone back down on the desk and waited for his answer.

It didn’t come.

Iopened the door up and blinked in shock.

“Surprise,” a voice said.

“Steph?” I said, shocked. The last I’d seen Steph had been in Comms the day I left the Service.

“Sorry to call ‘round unannounced. But I was passing by, and I just thought I’d say hello. See how you are. Are you busy?”

I shook my head.

“Come on in,” I offered and stood to the side to let her walk past.

I shut the door and counted my breaths as I followed her down the narrow hallway.

“Nice place,” she said, taking in my small flat.

“It’s all right,” I offered. “Coffee?”

“Yeah, love one. Long day in the office.” She took her jacket off, revealing her Ambulance uniform.

I stared at the epaulettes and then forced myself to make coffee.

She wrapped her hands around the mug I gave her and blew softly on the heated surface inside it.

“How are you?” she asked.

“Good. And you?”

“I got promoted to North Comm.”

“Fantastic. Well done.”

“Do you miss it?”

“Comms?”
