You Care Too Much

“When are you coming down to see us again?”

“I don’t know, Dad. It’s been really hectic.”

“I miss you,” he said.

“I miss you, too.”

“It’s been so long since you were last here. I’ve got some new Clive Cussler’s to tell you about.”

“How many books did you get from the library this time, Dad?”

He chuckled. “Needed a wheelbarrow.”

I laughed.

“Come down and see us, honey.”

“I’m not sure, Dad. I think it’s better for everyone if I give it a little more time.”

“Nonsense. We miss you.”

I said nothing.

“Kylee,” he said. “I may not like what you’ve done, sweetheart, but I willalwayslove you. You know that, right?”

I blinked a few times and said, “Yeah, I know that, Dad.”

“Then, when are you coming down to see us again?”

I started to laugh. “All right, all right! I’ll come down this weekend.”

“Brilliant! I’ll tell your mum.”

I stared out the lounge room window into the darkness and tried to still my frantically beating heart.

“I’m so glad you called in on your way down South,” Emma, my old school friend, said. “I feel like we haven’t seen nearly enough of each other since you moved to Auckland.”

“I know, right?” I said, bouncing Sophie on my knee. She seemed so much bigger than she did in the photo of her and me I’d hung in my cubicle at work.

“You look different,” my friend said.

I slowed down my manic knee jiggling and lowered Soph to the floor.

“I need to tell you something,” I said.

“What is it?” She looked worried.

I reached out and grabbed her hand, squeezing it.

“I left Sean,” I said.

She stared at me for a long time and said, “Oh, sweetie, I am sorry.”
