“It’s just a confidence thing. Once you’ve done it a couple of times, you’ll be all right.”

“It’s not a confidence thing, Sean. I just don’t think the Service should run single crewed vehicles. It’s not a good look.”

“And looks matter?”

“You know what I mean. Silverdale to North Shore Hospital is a long drive when you’re stuck in the back of an ambulance, and the paramedic is upfront in the driver’s seat.”

“That’s crap, Kylee. Besides, the Service can’t afford to double crew every damn vehicle. Do you want to take a pay cut?”

“I know I sure as hell don’t want to be a patient in a single crewed truck.”

“Whatever. I’ll be late home tomorrow. Got a staff meeting in the morning.”

“Oh, OK.”

He sighed. “Don’t cry.”

I frowned at the cell phone and then brought it back up to my ear.

“I really wish you’d be stronger, Kylee,” he said. “Like my mother. She’d never let little things get to her like this.”

I remained silent.

“You still there?”

I made a sound, then forced myself to speak.

“Gotta go. I’m in the middle of a scene.”

“Is it a love scene?” He sounded interested.

“No. A fight scene.”

“Oh, shame. Have fun. And give Tayla a call. Invite her ‘round for dinner or something.”

“I don’t feel like entertaining right now.”

“You’ve got to stay in touch with your friends, Kylee. You need to keep busy. You know that.”

“Hmmm.”

“OK, gotta go. Just got a P2 on the pager.”

I hadn’t heard the pager go off.

The line went dead, and I stared at the cursor flashing on the computer screen.

It was the best damn fight scene I’d ever written by the time I was through with it.

I kicked butt. Or at least my character did for me.
