Next Time

“Try this,” Michael said, offering me a piece of his eye fillet.

I took his fork and carefully placed the steak between my teeth. My eyes widened when it melted against my tongue; starbursts of flavours enveloping me.

“Good, right?” he said, taking his fork back and slicing off another piece for himself to eat.

I watched as he placed the tines to his lips and slid the mouthful off.

Then looked away and tried to breathe.

Voices rose as wine was consumed and the sun set on the Blue Mountains, painting their majesty in vibrant colours.

“So,” Michael said. “Enjoyed your first sales conference?”

“It’s been great.”

“What did you like the best?”

“Heather beating Luke at squash.”

Michael laughed. “He wasn’t expecting that; I think.”

“She kicked his butt.”

“You’ll find most sales reps are very competitive.”

“Are you?”

“Absolutely.” He smiled, flashing his teeth like a shark. “And so are you.”

“I’m not so sure about that.”

“Of course, you are,” he said. “You’re already determining to stand up in front of the team next year having met and surpassed your quota.”

“How do you know that?”

“Because you’re tenacious.”

“Tenacious?” I scoffed. “You’re dreaming, Suit Guy.”

“All right,” he said, placing his knife and fork down on his plate and turning in his seat to face me. “Were you a good paramedic?”

I blinked. “I did my job.”

“Just did it?”

“Well…”

“I bet you tried to top your paramedics’ class.”

I stared at my risotto.

“You did, didn’t you?”

“I aced the assignments,” I muttered.
