My phone vibrated.

Shawn: I want to see you. Where are you?

What was going on? He hadn’t texted me in weeks, and all the sudden he wanted to see me? That was a red flag. I tried not to let it get to me or sour my mood, but Hudson could tell. There was a shift in my mood suddenly. He didn’t like it. Bringing me closer to him, he whispered, “Are you okay?” I wanted to tell him, but right now wasn’t the right time. Everyone was having a good time, and there was no need to ruin it. We all moved around the bonfire, and I rested my head on his shoulder. He made me feel safe. I was right where I wanted to be.

The next thing I knew, all the guys started talking about their time in the military. I guess it wasn’t that uncommon considering all the men here were in the military at some point in their life, but Hudson didn’t like talking about his time. In fact, it made him shut down. I just got him to open all the way up. My mind went into overdrive, not wanting him to get depressed. Hudson suddenly got stiff as a rock, and I instantly knew something was wrong.

I leaned over. “Let’s go inside for a minute.” He just needed to get away from all this talk. When anyone brought up their military past, the next question was always to ask the other person about theirs, and Hudson refused. He had only opened up to a few people in two years, one of them being me. I hadn’t been told everything, and I didn’t expect to be. I felt honored he trusted me enough to tell me about it at all. It gladdened my heart.

We went inside and sat down on the couch in silence. I knew he didn’t want to talk about it, but I could at least hold his hand and help him. Suddenly he said, “Thank you for being you.”

I gave him a sweet kiss because we couldn’t get too heated with everyone outside. I just wanted to go home and cuddle up, enjoying his warmth against my exposed skin.

He whispered, “How about we get out of here?”

Not even waiting for an answer, he picked me up, yelled at Christina to clean up and lock the house, and we were out of there.

By the time we got to his apartment, he had already riled me up. He loved to drive with his hand on my thigh, tickling and massaging it. It was a message that he was ready to be home. I couldn’t lie, I was too, but I wanted tonight to be special. Today, I picked up a nightie amongst other things to wear for him. That meant he was going to have to wait. No jumping my bones as soon as we walked in the door which was exactly what he was trying to do.

“Slow down. You’ve got a surprise coming to you. Just go to the bedroom, and I’ll come in there. You won’t be disappointed,” I said, giving him a seductive wink. Although every time I tried to be seductive, it didn’t look like I wanted it to. I should stop.

I went to the bathroom to put on my red nightie, garter, and stockings. I decided to throw on some red pumps too to make it even sexier.

When I walked into the bedroom, his jaw dropped to his chest. He took his time taking me in, gazing at my breasts, then my stomach, and then the fact that my thigh-high stockings stopped right before the nightie did. I could tell he liked it.

I climbed on the bed and moseyed on up to him, slowly and seductively. There I went again with the seductive shit. I probably looked like an idiot. I just wanted to please him and try new things. I’d come to realize that being on a bed with heels wasn’t ideal. It was great for the look, but they should come off once you hit the bed, and he wasn’t having that.

“Leave them alone,” he said as he flipped me on my back. “They won’t bother you if they are in the air.”

An hour later, we snuggled up. There was no need for words at that moment. That’s all. Little did I know, I would be passing out shortly after.

Chapter 21

Laurel

When I woke up, there was a note next to the bed from Hudson letting me know he left to finish repairs on his parents’ house. I went next door to take a shower and clean up. I got out of the shower, and before getting dressed, I was thinking about going to surprise Hudson. At that time, I heard my doorbell ring. Was he back already?

“Back already?” I said, swinging open the door. To my surprise, it wasn’t Hudson. Shawn was standing in my doorway. How did he find out where I live? That made me feel incredibly uncomfortable.

“What the fuck are you doing here?” I yelled. It was bizarre. Why would he just show up here months after breaking up? I’d made it clear we were not getting back together. So, why would he come here?

“I wanted to see you.” He tried to kiss me, but I jostled him away. He tried to make his way into my apartment, but I halted him, barely. “Why are you acting like this?”

“Acting like this? You show up at my apartment, which I have no idea how you figured out where I live, and expect me to be okay? Are you out of your fucking mind?”

He tried to caress me, but I swiped his hand away. “Get away from me. Don’t fucking fondle me. I need you to leave.”

“Leave? You said you didn’t want to be long distance. Since you moved, I’ve missed you. Foolishly, I thought I would surprise you and move here,” he said, his face flushed.

Until now, I didn’t realize I was still in just a towel. I really should have gotten dressed before answering the door. “Don’t you think you should have called me first? I could have saved you the trip,” I said, being a bitch. I couldn’t help it. My ex just showed up on my doorstep, saying he’s moving here to be with me. I don’t know how else to respond.

“Well, obviously, you thought I was someone else, so it looks like it didn’t take you long to find someone new. That hurts.”

I think he’d gone unstable. The whole time we were together, it had never been anything like Hudson and me. The only reason we stayed together as long as we did was that we were comfortable. There had been no need to break it off. Now, I’m glad I did.

“You’ve been sleeping with everyone in the city, haven’t you?”

The moment he said that, I punched him in the mouth. I didn’t even think about it; it just happened. The thing was, I didn’t regret it. He deserved it.
