At that point, thinking too much about it would cause more harm than good. That news didn’t make me feel great but running and talking to Laurel while I was mad would only cause a fight. Right now, all she needed was rest.

Several hours had gone by like a blur. Laurel being out caused my day to be busier than normal. A deafening knock on my door surprised me, and Lyla walked in before I even had a chance to respond. “I thought you weren’t going to come around anymore? Did your husband not believe you?” I couldn’t help myself anymore. Being nice to that woman wasn’t an option anymore.

“We have some matters to discuss. It shouldn’t take long. I would have made an appointment, but your help isn’t at her desk,” she said, smiling like she just got away with murder.

“The police called—” Laurel said, walking in on Lyla with her hand awfully close to my junk. Her eyes went wide while she stared at Lyla. I stood up and backed away from her in case a catfight broke out. Although, my money would be on Laurel.

“We don’t allow prostitutes in the building. Wait on the corner like a respectable hooker. No need to beg.” Laurel didn’t even flinch while speaking. She didn’t give a rat’s ass about Lyla. Should I be proud or angry? I couldn’t decide.

“You let your help speak to clients this way? I’ll be sure to tell all my friends about this,” Lyla said, straightening up her dress.

“Honey, let’s get something cleared up. To begin with, I’m not the help, but I do have the pleasure of getting off multiple times every night by my boyfriend over there. Second, I just sent the video to your husband, so I hope you give the best blow jobs around, or you are going to be out on your ass in a matter of hours.” Nothing but a smile crept across Laurel’s face. She knew Lyla had nothing else to say back. While walking out of my office, Lyla immediately dialed her husband in tears. We both knew sucking up wasn’t going to work.

My office door was open, and I could see all my employees watching. Right now, we were at work and as Laurel’s boss, I had to fire her. As much as I enjoyed watching Lyla squirm, she couldn’t get away with talking to a client like that, no matter the circumstances.

“I’m gonna need you to go home. That behavior was completely unacceptable. I’m sorry. Until I know you won’t do that again, you are fired.” I knew that made me a dick, but I had to think of my company’s reputation as well as how my employees thought of me as a boss. I couldn’t let my girlfriend get away with that. We had discussed this. At the office, we must both act professionally always.

Her eyes went wide, and it looked like she was about to cry. As her boyfriend, that made me feel like a complete asshole. My intentions were not to make her cry. The next thing I knew, she was storming off, but I didn’t stop her. I couldn’t run after her with all my employees watching. I must wait. We got off in an hour anyway. Going back to my office, I texted her.

Me: I had to. Everyone heard you. If not, I would have high-fived you. Thanks for having my back.

I got back to work, finishing my emails and signing contracts. After forty-five minutes, I still hadn’t received a response. Instead, I tried to call her, but it went directly to voicemail. Damn, could she be that mad?

Chapter 25

Laurel

Standing in Hudson’s office, making it clear to Lyla that Hudson came home to me every night, made me feel empowered. Uploading the video to her husband made sure Hudson wouldn’t lose his business. It was a win-win situation for both of us until he fired me. Everyone knew she was handsy, but I was the only one to do anything about it. I couldn’t stand there and face him after that.

I headed over to my sister’s apartment. My anger over this situation was radiating to the point that my blood was boiling. The least he could have done was pull me back in his office. There had been no need to fire me in front of the whole staff. Lacey answered the door and invited me in. I was sure she could tell something was wrong right off the bat because she gave me a “mommy look.”

“What’s up with you?” Lacey asked.

I knew I shouldn’t be as mad as I was at him, but I couldn’t help it. I just needed some time to cool off. No big deal. So, I brushed off her question and shifted the subject.

“You ready for graduation?” I asked. Lacey had been studying hard, and as long as she passed all her classes this semester, then she would graduate in a couple of months. I couldn’t be prouder of her.

“I’m ready to finally be able to do something other than study and go to class. This has been a long four years. I hope it’s worth it,” she said, laughing.

I could understand. I didn’t stay in college. I went for two years to get my associates and dropped out. I would rather be out here working than stuck in a classroom.

“You are going to do great things one day. Don’t you worry about that.” I couldn’t help but smile while I said that to my sister. She had always been the more level-headed one. It was true when people said we were complete opposites.

I’d been planning a graduation party for months. This was a big deal to our family. She would be the first to graduate with a bachelor’s degree. I wanted to celebrate her big achievement, and it was well deserved.

I started thinking about how when we were younger, all she talked about was how I got all the attention, but I always felt like it was the other way around with her being the youngest. Ever since we both moved to Dallas, we hadn’t seen our parents much. They didn’t exactly call us every day either. However, I was going to make sure they showed up for her graduation; a reminder was needed for them. They weren’t the youngest parents around but still not the oldest either. I texted my mom to remind her of it. I probably wouldn’t get a response for a couple of days, but at least I could say I tried.

I heard knocking down the hall but not faintly. Our ears perked up, and we looked at each other. Since we had both been in bad situations, we were quick to jump. I got up slowly, opened the door quietly, and gasped loudly when I saw him at my door.

I slammed the door and locked it. Although, it wouldn’t take much to get through.

“What is it? What’s going on?” Lacey shrieked.

“N-N-Nothing… just stay back. Don’t answer the door!” I screamed. Her eyes went wide, telling me I’d scared her. Right now, I was pretty scared myself. Why was Shawn banging on my door? How did he get out?

He started kicking the door, and we both knew it was only a matter of time before he gained entry. I couldn’t think straight. My mind kept going back to that night when he nearly choked me to death. The only thing that stopped him was Hudson, but he wasn’t here. I turned on my phone and tried to dial him, but before I could, the door was broken down.

“Hey, bitch, why are you hiding from me? I was only trying to give you what you deserved until your stupid boyfriend messed everything up.” He looked around the room. “Looks like he’s not here to save you this time.”
