Chapter 27

Hudson

Icalled Chris to see if he was still at the office and surprisingly, he wasn’t. He had never been one to go home because, in his mind, there was always work to be done. He didn’t get rewarded enough for all the hours he worked. “I need you to meet me at the office in ten minutes. It’s an emergency,” I requested of him with no hesitation. The urgency in my voice told him I was determined.

“Okay, boss. I’ll be there,” he said before hanging up.

If anyone could find Shawn, it would be him. He constantly stunned me at what he could do. The information he could dig up on people was superb. That was why he was my go-to guy for this. I required someone who could track Shawn down. He had to be somewhere near here because it hadn’t been that long since the incident.

I was driving way too fast down the street, but I didn’t care. Right now, all I wanted to do was get there as fast as humanly possible so that I could get that guy behind bars tonight. My rage was consuming me. I wanted to get my hands around his throat. He needed to be taught a lesson on how to treat women.

Pulling up to my building, I parked right out front. I didn’t care if it said no parking. It was the last thing I was worried about right now. I took the elevator up to Chris’ floor, and he was in front of his computer waiting for instructions. “What can I do for you, boss?” he asked eagerly, looking at me for direction.

My fists clenched as I handed him a piece of paper with a number on it. “Can you trace this phone number? I need to know where this person is and fast.”

He didn’t hesitate, took the paper, and started typing into his computer furiously. “Boss, is everything okay? You seem tense.”

“Don’t worry about that right now. Just work!” I yelled, but I didn’t mean to. I couldn’t think straight, knowing he was still out there. Who knew if he was going to snap and do this to some other poor woman tonight.

“He is somewhere on 8th Avenue. I can’t pinpoint the exact location, but he is somewhere on that street. Looks like he has been there for over an hour,” he said, handing the paper back to me.

“Thanks, you can go back home now. I’ll explain later,” I said to him as I rushed out the door, pulling out my phone.

“I might have a location on Shawn. Somewhere on 8th Avenue. I’m on my way there now,” I said into my phone.

“Okay, I’ll send units there now. Wait for us. We will have to canvas before we go in. He could be anywhere on that street,” Leo said.

Leo had been seeing Lacey, but I wasn’t sure if Laurel was aware. I hadn’t said anything because it was none of my business. Right now, I was gratified Leo was an officer. He wouldn’t hesitate to call for backup on this.

I got in my car and drove insanely fast to 8th Avenue. Pulling up, my mind was running through the ways it could play out. I couldn’t go in because he knew what I looked like. He would run in a heartbeat or cause a scene. The last thing I wanted was for someone else to get hurt by this guy.

“Have you seen him?” Leo said, jumping out of his car.

“No, you said to wait. I follow direct orders,” I said. My military training always taught me not to rush into a situation without having a plan. It never ended well.

Leo was followed by three cop cars that backed down the block with no lights on. We didn’t want to cause attention. The element of surprise was going to be our biggest asset right now.

“I can go in and canvas the businesses. There’s only two businesses open right now. Both of which are bars. I know what he looks like. I’ll text you when I see him. Remember, the police are the ones that make the call. Don’t do anything stupid,” Leo said to me. Did he think I wanted more people to get hurt? I wanted this guy behind bars after I roughed him up.

Leo went inside the first bar and came back out about twenty minutes later. He was not in that one. The next bar was down the street. We followed far behind him because we all knew he must be in that bar. There were no other options. Shortly after Leo went inside, I received a text.

Leo: He’s here. Not Alone. I’ll see if I can snap a photo of the other guy. Show it to the officers and see if they can get a photo hit in the database.

The picture came through, and I handed my phone over. We waited for a photo match, and sure enough, it was Drew. The one who hurt Lacey. Why are they together? My mind was going haywire, but that couldn’t be just a coincidence. Did they know each other?

Me: That’s Drew. He went to jail for assaulting Lacey months ago. They must be working collaboratively. What do you want to do?

Leo: Too many people in here. We can’t take the chance of retaliation or casualties. We must wait them out. They have to leave at some point.

He was right. The bar closed in three hours. If they didn’t leave before that, then surely most of the customers would be gone by then.

After about an hour, I overheard one of the police officers talking about Shawn and Drew.

“What did you find out?” I asked politely. Technically, they didn’t have to tell me anything. Maybe being nice would help get information out of them.

“Those guys inside. They were cellmates. Probably why they met up at this bar. They both just got released recently.”

That was it! They made plans to do that. They were both sick. What were the odds they would be placed together? I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
