Everyone from work showed up, including our friend, Leo. He found Lacey and gave her a quick kiss on the cheek. Leo finally came clean to Laurel about their relationship about a month ago. She didn’t like that they were hiding it from her, but she understood. Leo treated Lacey like a queen which was what she deserved. Leo was a good man. He loved her. Even though they had only been together for around five months, he already told me she was his soulmate. I knew how he felt; Laurel was mine. I knew it the moment I first laid eyes on her at the hospital. I tried fighting it, make it be untrue, but no matter what, the universe fought back. It knew I had needed her in my life.

Today was a big day for many people. Lacey graduated from college after four long years. I had plans to do something tonight. As did someone else. Laurel had been there for me when I needed her the most. I couldn’t let her go. So, I decided to do it. I wanted it to be perfect. Her entire family was here. It was the best time.

I took her out on the dance floor and showed her off, but then when our song came on, down on one knee I went. Her eyes started watering as she covered her mouth with her hands. “No, Hudson, this can’t be true.”

“Baby, from the moment you stepped into my life, it has been a whirlwind of emotions. At first, I wasn’t sure how to handle it, but then it struck me. You are the person I am meant to be with until death do us part, have children, and grow old and gray with. It’s you, baby. Will you marry me?”

If I were self-conscious, freaking out would probably happen, considering the long pause of silence in between the question and answer, but I knew she was just in shock.

“Baby, of course, I will marry you,” she replied. Everyone whistled and hollered their congratulations.

I was not the only one though. I looked over to see Leo down on one knee as well. I couldn’t act like I didn’t know. We did plan this together. Lacey and Laurel’s whole family was in town, and they needed to be present for our engagements. We were traditional, so we did ask Robert for his permission which he gladly gave, seeing how happy his daughters were with us.

“I want to spend the rest of my life with you. However long it may be. Would you do me the honor of being my wife?” Leo said on one knee, shedding tears.

Lacey didn’t even respond before he put the ring on her finger, then she kissed him. “Yes, yes, I will marry you.”

One of the most joyous days of my life was the day Laurel agreed to be my wife.

As I read the email, my whole body tensed.

Upon reading the disaster of an email, I realized my world had flipped upside down within a matter of seconds. My stomach tightened and a headache started to endure. What the heck was I going to do? I couldn’t stop now. My dream hinged on me graduating and I wasn’t going to stop now. I wasn’t a stranger to such tragedy.

My parents busted their asses when I was a kid to give me simple things like clothes on my back and a decent home. Why couldn’t I have had the blissful life like the rich kids? I wanted nothing more than to have a pair of new shoes, purse or car. There was always this twinge of jealousy or even annoyance. My dad was never the healthy type, and when you grow up in a shitty neighborhood with barely enough to make the month’s rent, alcohol proved to be his medicine. He’d drink himself blind every night, and sometimes he couldn’t even remember my name. I forgave him because he was my dad, and kids like me understand just how rare it is to even know yours. These past few years turned out to be his karma. His liver turned to absolute shit, and the doctor told us he had liver cancer. It’s sad to say we weren’t surprised. All the alcohol was catching up to him. Karma was really a thing.

When I was ten years old, I swore I’d be the first in my family to graduate from college. Unlike my parents, I didn’t want to be stuck in their small town. My big dreams that have followed me since childhood were still inside me. I wasn’t about to fail at my own dream. In order to fulfil my own agenda, desperation became my muse. I would doanythingto get my education paid for.
