Chapter 6

Camilla

Irushed around toget ready, not expecting to go out tonight. Looking in the mirror, my hair’s a mess, filled with curls and tangles from having it up in a messy bun. It would be easier to just leave it that way than try to fix it. I had no time.

I browsed through my closet to figure out what to wear, and decided on dark jeans, and a black lace blouse. My black wedges were comfortable so I threw them on. To give my outfit some color, I put on a pair of red hoop earrings and a long red necklace.

Ding dong.

Opening the door, I was so excited to finally see him and he looked so handsome, it made me want to kiss him right there. Brilliant minds think alike, I guess. Customarily, I was taller than most men due to my heels, but not him. He still stood about three to four inches taller than me.

I followed him to his car, the door ajar so I slipped inside letting out an audible sigh.

“Are you okay?” He asked.

“Yeah, I’m fine,” I replied smiling. I don’t want him to think I’m not, it’s just been a long week. I’m exhausted but since he’s a doctor and works crazy hours, he can relate.

“Any chance our date involves napping like kindergarteners?” I asked, being sarcastic. Those were the days. Sometimes, I daydream about going back to those times, and not having to be an adult.

He laughed, “I wish. I could take a nap right now too.”

As we rode into town, I yawned a third time as he told me about his family.

“Ya sure you’re okay? If you want to do this another time, we can?”

Damn, I’m doing exactly what I didn’t want to do. “No, I’m okay seriously. Once we’re out of the car, I’ll be fine. Car rides put me to sleep.”

He stared at me for a second, trying to figure out if I was lying.

Finally, we made it to the restaurant. We got to the table he reserved, and it’s candlelit with rose petals in the middle of the table around a wine bottle being chilled. As my eyes peered around the restaurant, there were no petals or table decorations on the other tables. He put in the effort for this dinner to make it fancy. How sweet. Plus, under such short notice. I’m impressed. “So how was your day?”

“Well, I worked only twelve hours today, so that’s better. Performed some surgeries, but nothing major.” He answered and paused like he wanted to ask me something.Come on, just do it. Ask!“So, how come you never told me?”

“Informed you about what exactly?”

“That you were crushing on me.”

My brow wrinkled, “I was young and ignorant. Too worried about getting rejected. Girls flocked to you.”

“I would have said yes to you in a heartbeat. Honestly, my crush started the day I met you. Sure, I was only eight-years-old, but it was there.”

The day he moved in, I was outside riding my bike. This was the same day I rode it for the first time without training wheels. The next day, he was outside trying to ride his bike without training wheels. It took a few hours, but he did it. “I wish we wouldn’t have been so scared to tell each other years ago.”

After dinner, he walked me to the car, with his hand at the small of my back.

“Can I take you somewhere?”

“Where?” I asked, inquisitively.

“It’s a surprise. Do you have time?”

He wouldn’t tell me where, but hopefully it was somewhere warm. It’s distinctly frigid outside tonight. Although, with Arkansas weather, you never know when it’s going to be hot or cold. It could change in a matter of hours from bright and sunny into a snowstorm. I’ve seen it happen. We pulled up to our familiar street. The one, we both grew up on. He stopped the car and pointed to his house. “Did you know the day I moved in, I couldn’t take my eyes off you. Even at eight-years-old. You were so thrilled because you learned how to ride your bike without training wheels.”

“Wow, you remember that?”

“Yes, the following day, I came out here and rode my bike for hours the next day trying to show you I could do it too.”

Even back then, at such a young age, he was trying to gain my attention. Why was I so afraid to tell him? So many opportunities, and not enough gall to take them.
