Chapter 11

Sebastian

Ididn't get much sleeplast night after our date. My mind kept telling me I was pulling away from her and screwing things up.

“Your 2 o’clock appointment’s here.” The receptionist informed me. My practice was doing well, but I loved helping in the ER.

“Send them back.”

It’s not that I didn’t like working in the ER, but working at a practice made the hours more predictable. Going back and forth made getting onto a schedule seem next to impossible.

A cute little girl walked in with pigtails. Man, I can’t wait to have kids. “How are you, sweetie?”

She smiled and got up onto the examination table. “Do I have to get shots? I don’t like them, they hurt.” The mom walked in and stood next to her.

“What’s your name?” I asked, her mom wanting to answer for her.

It’s irritating when the parents want to answer all the questions. How do you expect the kids to develop vocabulary and teach them to think for themselves?

“Kimberly.”

I put my hand out, “It’s nice to meet you. No shots for you today. It’s just a check-up to see how big and strong you’ve grown.”

After the examination, Kimberly left and the final two patients were seen.

More and more, I’ve been thinking aboutDoctor Without Borders. If I ever got the chance to travel to another country and help children get the care they need, I’d jump. They were the reason I became a pediatrician. I’d applied, but they only pick so many doctors a year. I had to be patient, the chances of me getting picked anytime soon were slim.

My phone went off.

Camilla: Work sucks. What’d you say we go back to preschool? Those naps were the best.

Oh man, what I wouldn’t give for a nap right about now.

Me: A nap sounds like heaven.

I wanted to go over to her house, but sleep was needed. A good night’s rest sounded perfect. We’ve already got a date on Thursday, so she’ll understand.

Me: Can’t wait to see you on Thursday. I’m headed home and then to bed.
