“I’m here, sweetie.” I said, placing my hand on her shoulder before moving over to the other side of the bed. Her face was red with a streak down from her eyes. Where was Jonathan?

I took his hand in mine, and laid my head down. All the wires and sounds were terrifying me. “Abigail, what happened?”

She looked me dead in the eye, took a deep breath to gain her composure, “Sebastian was heading to work when some drunk driver ran a red light and practically ran him over. He was found a long way from his bike. He’s in critical condition and may have to undergo surgery once the primary doctor comes in and looks at his tests. As of right now, it doesn’t look good.”

My heart sank. Critical condition?

“Where the hell is Jonathan?”

“He’s terrified of hospitals. I tried, but he wouldn’t.”

“He needs to man the fuck up. If something happens and he isn’t here, he’ll never forgive himself.” I knew I was being over the top, but his best friend was lying in the hospital and he’s not here. If I didn’t mind leaving Sebastian, I’d go over and kick his ass myself.

I held his hand, not wanting to let go. He was too young and had a long life ahead of him. This couldn’t be the end for him. The world needed more of Sebastian. I needed more. It makes you put things into perspective. Cherish the things you love. Don’t ever take them for granted.

The door opened, and in walked a man in blue scrubs. “Ladies, I wanted to talk to you about Sebastian’s condition. Now, you know he’s unconscious. He suffered an immense amount of damage from the accident. Let’s hope he’s is determined and wants to fight.”

I cannot lose him.

“Is there anything we can do?” Abigail asked, beating me to the punch.

“Talk to him. Ask him to fight. It couldn’t hurt. I’ll be by later to check in.”

Jonathan needed to get his ass down here. If the worst happens, we all need to be here. I grabbed Abigail’s phone and dialed his number.

“Ab- what’s going on? Did he..”

“You need to get here right now. I know you don’t like hospitals, but grow the fuck up. Sebastian might not make it. Stop being a coward and get your ass up here.” He didn’t respond, but I didn’t give him a chance either.

Abigail and I sat in silence, watching him waiting to see his beautiful eyes open. Nothing. I said a prayer. The only person who could control the situation right now would be Sebastian and God.

“I’m here.” Jonathan announced himself, walking into the room with his head down. “I came. I’m sorry.”

I waved him over, forgiving him, but wanting him to come sit with us. “Let’s not worry about that anymore. Grab that chair, and sit down with us.”

We all hung around Sebastian’s bed talking about our experiences, hoping Sebastian could hear us talking. Too many people cared for him, hell his patients. What would they do when their beloved doctor doesn’t show up?

Please, god, if you are listening, give him one more shot. The world is better off with him in it. Let him make the difference he so desperately fought to make. Please. Amen.

???

I woke up hoping he would be conscious, but my prayers weren’t answered. I called Abigail and Jonathan to see if they were coming up to the hospital.

“Are you guys coming back up here?” I asked.

“Yeah, we are getting ready now.” Abigail answered.

“Bring something to eat, please.”

“Okay. See you in a bit.”

Something triggered my mind to his mom. Did anyone contact her? Surely, she was his emergency contact.

I walked outside to the nurses’ station.

“Room 302. Have you called his emergency contact?”

The nurse pulled up and nodded. “Yes we contacted Jonathan.”
