“I’m fine, thank you. The partners and I talked it over, and we would like you to join us. We think you would bring something unique to our practice. Would you like time to think it over?”

My hands were shaking, heart-pounding, and my dream had finally come true. Out of the candidates, they chose me. “I accept. When do I start?”

Chapter 2

Camilla

My heels clicked againstthe pavement as I marched into the next chapter of my career. The partnership with Shure and West commenced today, and the sheer excitement was overpowering; I couldn’t keep still. I swung my hands, trying to get out the jitters since there was no reason to be apprehensive. The fresh blossoming flowers nipped at my nostrils, making me sneeze. I forgot about how horrible my allergies used to get here during Spring.

The absurd thing was I never planned on moving back to my hometown, but becoming a partner was a huge deal, especially at twenty-eight years old. I liked Raleigh, but Fort Smith was home. My best friend lived here, and most people already knew me, so I was someone they could trust to be on their side.

My chest rose and fell before walking inside the office for the first time.I can do this.

“Morning. You must be Camilla.” The receptionist said, extending her hand. “Nice to meet you. Can I interest you in some water or coffee?”

“I’m okay, but thank you.” I loved her already. “What’s your name?”

“Alyson.” She responded with a smile. “Let me show you to your office.”

As we reached the end of the corridor, a door with my name on it was open. It had an elegant L shaped cherry oak desk with floor to ceiling windows to let in natural light. This office was much better than the one in Raleigh.

“I’ll leave you to it,” Alyson said, exiting my office.

I put down my bag and strolled over to the windows to appreciate the view. It had a garden outside, with bird feeders and oh, a blue jay.

A knock sounded, and a man wandered in. “How are you settling in?” He peered around with an inquiring look on his face. “Didn’t you bring anything to decorate? Maybe a picture frame?”

“I didn’t figure I’d have time today since I’ve got my computer to set up and return client calls.” Honestly, I hadn’t thought much about how I was going to decorate my office.

“That’s fine. No rush. Welcome to the team. We’re all excited to have you here.” He said, extending a smile before he left.

Mr. West had been a prosecutor for the last thirty years, and this firm belonged to his family for three generations. I was the first outsider to be a partner and incredibly proud of this accomplishment. The last thing I wanted to do was disappoint them.

I spent three hours getting the computer set up correctly and checking my email. I had a couple of cases coming up I needed to prepare for from referrals, but I could do that tomorrow.

Me: So I’m in my new office. I’ll send you some pictures.
