As a doctor, I’ve seen my fair share of domestic violence and they usually don’t end well. I really don’t want my mom to end up a statistic.
My phone rang and Jonathan’s name popped up.
“Hey bro, you off today?”
“Sure am. Why whats up?”
“Well, we’ve decided not to wait, and weddings in a week.”
“Wait, are you serious?”
“The lady gets what she wants. We gotta go get our tuxes. I’m outside.”
I couldn’t imagine getting married in a week. How could they possibly get everything ready in time?
Locking my door behind me, I walked to his car.
“Let’s do this.” I said, slipping into his car.
I had so much going in my mind, but I wanted to present for this with him. My best friend was getting married and chose me to be his best man. It was an honor.
“What’s been going on? You and Camilla seem to be hitting it off again.” He asked, glancing over at me.
“It’s going good. Getting back in the swings of things. You know, how things were before the accident.”
“You guys are made for each other. We could tell from that first night. Stop fighting it.”
Everyone misunderstood us. We weren’t fighting it. Things just kept getting in the way.
“I hope we make it. I”m trying my damndest.”
The tux shop was practically empty so we got to try on tuxedos without anyone around. When the salesman asked Jonathan what he had in mind, he had no clue. This led us to try on anything that interested him on the wall. The final decision was made on a simple black tuxedo, after trying on many vibrant patterns and colors.
After paying for them, and confirming they would be ready in time, we left.
“You seem kinda out of it today?” You alright?”
“It’s my mom. We just found out her cancer is back.”
“Oh shit. I’m so sorry to hear that. Chemo again?”
“Lots of it. She won’t leave my dad, and you know how hard it is for me to go over there.”
“I know, but she’s your mom.”
“Believe me, I keep telling myself that.”
When he dropped me off back at home, the bed was calling my name. All I wanted to do was get some more sleep in before heading back to work tomorrow.
