Chapter 22

Camilla

My phone chimed andI grabbed it off the nightstand noticing it’s three in the morning. I groggily looked at it and had five missed calls from Abigail and a couple text messages.

Abigail: I have some terrible news. Text me back.

Me: I was asleep. What’s wrong?

Abigail: Sebastian’s dad is dead.

Me: Oh, my god. Is Sebastian okay? What happened? WTF is going on?

I tried to call Sebastian, but he didn’t answer.

Abigail: No, he isn’t. I need you to come over here. I will explain everything to you when you get here.

Me: On my way.

I rushed to put my clothes on and drove over to Abigail’s house.

“Abigail, what’s going on? What happened? Please tell me he is okay.” I asked.

“You know Sebastian’s dad abused him and his mom, right?”

“Yes. What the hell is going on?”

“Well, Sebastian went over to their house last night because his mom called him screaming. When he got there, his dad was on top of her hitting her, and he was wasted. Sebastian’s father was yelling to stop, and he wouldn’t. So, he found his dad’s gun and shot him. I don’t know much else right now. I will let you know if I hear from him or anything else. You will be the first person I call.”

I can’t even imagine what Sebastian was going through right now. No wonder he wasn’t answering his phone. His mom was probably devastated even though his father was a piece of crap. She was bound by the heart, with that man for decades.

Even though Sebastian's dad was a terrible man she loved him. She wouldn’t leave him even after years and years of abuse. Sebastian was so glad when he turned 18 because he didn’t have to live there anymore, and he could get away from his father indefinitely. He repeatedly tried to get his mom to leave, but she wouldn’t. Once you were married, you stayed married until death according to her. No matter what.

“I have no idea what to say right now.”

“The police showed up and took him to jail, but with all the visible damage to his mom, they ruled it as self-defense. Sebastian was traumatized. He killed his father. Sebastian is going to need a support system to deal with this, but he holds everything in.”

Sebastian had to put up with his dad all his life and take the abuse. He was just a child, and his mom could have stopped it. He tried to talk his mom into leaving multiple times when he was a teenager, but she wanted to stay. She loved him, abusive or not. He was her husband.

He wasn’t ever shown affection during his childhood from either of his parents. He only got yelled at and beat up. I think that would traumatize any child for life. My phone chimed and its Sebastian.

Sebastian: I’m so sorry. A lot has happened, and my phone has been the last thing on my mind.

Me: Abigail told me. I won’t ask any questions. I know what kind of man your father was. You can come over when you’re ready.

I can’t imagine what he was going through right now, and I don’t know if I would be able to help cope with what he did even though he had good intentions and didn’t have any other choice. He wanted to protect his mother from his father.

About thirty minutes later, my doorbell rang.
