He laughs. “I’m over it. There are plenty of women out there, and I’m not going to fight you over a girl. Not worth it.”

I’m glad he is finally seeing the light and has decided to drop it.

“By the way, how’d it go?”

I leave out some of the details on purpose. Vanessa is aware that he knows, and she can’t be mad as long as he doesn’t run his mouth.

“Well, I’m glad you found someone, bro. It’s about damn time.”

We sit around his living room for about an hour, just watching some crime show, and then I leave to go home. I still need to eat and take a shower after the long day.

I pass by Vanessa's house on the way home, and Lee’s car is outside. A part of me wonders why he’s there? It’s like eight at night. So, I turn around, and pull in the driveway. I have a perfect view through the living room window. Lee, Vanessa, and Sherrie are sitting around the table, laughing and eating. Is there more to their relationship than she is telling me? I’ve never seen someone so cozy with their recent ex? Does it bother me? Yes, but if I want things to work with Vanessa, then I can’t be jealous towards Sherrie’s father. He will always be in the picture.

So, I back out of the driveway, and head home without letting them see me.

Don’t ruin a good thing before it even gets going.

VANESSA

Sherrie joins me at the dinner table, and we talk about practice, when someone knocks on the door and then comes in. I expect it to be Tina, but it’s Lee.

“Daddy!”

“Hey, baby girl. Eating dinner?”

She nods, and he comes and sits at the table. “Room for one more?”

I nod, and make him a plate.

“Sorry, I couldn’t stay for the whole practice. I had to take care of something.”

His eyes glare at me, but I try to stay chipper for Sherrie. I refuse to fight in front of her for whatever he is mad about, and he shouldn’t be walking into my house either. Is he still upset about me going on a date?

Sherrie tells him all about practice, and Lee listens, but his eyes keep glancing at me.

“Are you enjoying coaching? You loved softball when you were younger. I think that’s where our daughter gets it.”

“It’s nice to teach them about the mechanics, but it’s been years since I played. Sherrie enjoys having me engaged in her experience, so when she asked, I couldn’t say no.”

Once Sherrie is finished eating, I ask her to go get in the shower and ready for bed. After she leaves the room, his fork drops against his plate and both elbows bang down on the table.

“How long have you been messing around with the coach?” he whispers.

Did Tina tell her damn husband about Brodie? She’s supposed to be my best friend, and what I tell her should stay between us.

“Excuse me?”

He swipes at the air. “Oh, don’t play dumb. Everyone saw the way you looked at each other today. Our relationship wasn’t the best, but you couldn’t even wait a month before getting into someone else’s bed?”

This conversation is crossing a line. Why should I wait until he deems appropriate to find someone? I spent ten fucking years of my life thinking about others, and now I’m finally doing what I want.

“Lee, I’m going to stop you right there. You hadn’t touched me in almost three years. I don’t know if you were getting it elsewhere, but that’s not healthy. I deserve to be desired, and touched. Brodie is a good man, and has been upfront about everything. Why is it my problem that you aren’t dating yet?”

I get up from my chair and slam my plate down in the sink.

He follows me and then gets real close. “I fucked up, okay. That’s obvious, but I still love you. Seeing you with someone else is killing me, and I thought maybe being apart would help us get back to way things used to be.”
