I never thought of myself as the girl who sleeps with her professor. Noah doesn’t deserve to lose his job or be put in a place like this because of what happened between us.

“Listen, I know this is bizarre. I think we can both agree that if we knew then what we know now, we never would have slept together.”

He nods, and runs his fingers through his hair. “Never.”

“So, there is no need to freak out about this. I’m not going to tell anyone, Noah. I’m not some young student trying to sleep with you to better her grades or something. I’m a grown ass woman who understands the consequences.”

As much as I like Noah, things between us are at a standstill. We can’t pursue a relationship. I don’t ever want to have to questions whether I made an A off my own intelligence or because we are seeing each other. Some might use it to their advantage, but not me. He’s lucky he slept with me and not some other student.

My phone buzzes against the table, and I pick it up to reveal an email from the Financial Aid office. I’ve been waiting for them to tell me what my assignment is this semester. My mouth drops.

“Have you checked your email?” I ask, staring at my phone.

He takes it out of his pocket, and clicks it open. “You’ve got to be fucking kidding me.”

This cannot happen. It’s one thing for us to be in a classroom filled with other students, but his office without supervision? Not a good idea.

Out of all the teachers on campus, they have to assign me to be a teaching assistant for him? What kind of sick crap is this?

“I’ll just request someone else. Not a big deal,” he replies, clacking away at the keyboard on his phone.

“No, don’t do that, please.”

He looks at me, and tilts his head. “I’m sure there is another teacher that could use an assistant, Leslie.”

“This is the only way my tuition is paid for, and I can’t afford it out of pocket. Noah, please…”

He lays his phone down on the table and turns to me. “There are other teachers. Calm down.”

“You are messing with my future. Don’t tell me to calm down. What if all the assignments have been given, and I have to drop out because you couldn’t handle me being your assistant. I’ll never forgive you.”

The oven beeps, and he gets off of the couch, and heads into the kitchen. Instead of giving him space, I follow him. He has to understand that without this, I can’t continue my semester. I will be stuck at Grapevine Fire Department forever.

“I refuse to let you fuck this up for me. We can be professional. Our past does not have to affect our professional relationship in any way.”

Honestly, at this point, I don’t even want to stay for dinner. I’d rather go home and drink some wine. Too much has happened today that I need to process, and being here right now isn’t good for either of us. Is it bad that even though he’s my professor, my mind is still replaying what happened last night?

“I’m going to go home, Noah. Not feeling up to dinner,” I say, grabbing my keys and heading for the door.

He yells from the kitchen. “Meet me at seven in my office. First floor of the English hall. We will discuss your role and what’s expected.”

Instead of responding, I open the front door and walk straight out.

Noah might not want to lose his job, but he doesn’t strike me as the type to want to ruin a life either. I have one semester left to graduate and I’ll be damned if anything is going to stand in my way. Being a teacher’s assistant is the only way for my tuition to get paid, and even if it’s with Noah, professional is all I’ll ever be.

NOAH

It’s not a good idea. She should be assigned to someone else, but I can’t be the one that ruins the chances of her graduating just because I want to fuck her again. The spark from last night, it’s still there, and even seeing her kneeling in my lecture hall today, I wanted to continue seeing her. I know it’s wrong on so many levels, unethical, but she’s not a child.

This isn’t an ethical boundary I ever thought I’d be faced with, but here we are. Leslie is an amazing woman, and if she is still single come the end of the semester, I would love to get to know her better, but she should’ve at least stayed for dinner.

It’s good to know I’m not the only one freaked out about this situation. She has things riding on this also, and knowing that she is just trying to finish the semester to get her degree, who am I to stand in the way?

The perspiration has caused a ring on the coffee table from my Cognac and I go to the kitchen and grab a coaster. My wife would have a cow if she saw this. What am I supposed to do with all this food? I shouldn’t have cooked anything. How could I expect her to stay and have dinner with me after telling her we can’t see each other? I’m a fucking idiot.

Jaden is in town and he might be able to help me confirm that I’m making the right decision. A professor sleeping with his student is one thing, but with his assistant, that’s even worse. I don’t want to be that guy. Especially, after how hard I’ve always been on my students. I hold them to a high standard, and this would ruin my reputation.
