“I can’t imagine or begin to understand how much that hurts… I’m just here to forget about what happened today. We can both drink our sorrows away together.”

He walks over to the bar and comes back with a new vodka and Sprite. “Don’t worry, I don’t expect anything.”

I tell him about the little girl, and he sips on his Cognac, not taking his eyes off of me while I’m speaking. It’s refreshing because others would have acted like they were listening, and just nod, but he is actually listening to me.

“You had a rough day. Listen not to be forward, but I’m enjoying the conversation and your company and would love you to come back to my place.”

He shakes his head, but before he can retract the offer I agree.

I’m certainly nothing like my sister, who has already left with someone, but he is the first man that has been a gentleman about it. Hell, I could be reading more into it, and he’s not even asking to sleep with me. Maybe he is just lonely.

It seems maybe it’s been a while since we have been touched, and some intimacy is something that helps take my mind off everything from today.

A release might be just what I need…

NOAH

This is the most pleasant conversation I’ve had in a long time, and didn’t even have to get on a dating app. Leslie has agreed to come to my home, and I almost retracted the invitation. Now, she probably thinks I just want to sleep with her. Not that I’m opposed to it, but that’s not my sole intention. There is a first edition of Thirteen Problems in my den at home and I’ll offer to loan it to her.

“Not to be weird, but I’ll just follow you.”

I laugh because having an exit strategy makes sense. She doesn’t know me. I could be an axe murderer or something.

“Yeah, that’s fine.”

She follows me out, and waits to see what car I get into, before turning her car on and pulling out after me. I never thought I would ask a woman to come back to my place, but maybe finally finishing a chapter has given me some much needed confidence.

When I pull into my driveway, she pulls up beside me, and cuts the engine. Is she starting to regret her decision?

When she gets out and shuts the car door, she has a smile on her face, but can’t tell if it’s forced or not.

“If you want to leave, you can. I don’t want you to feel uncomfortable,” I say, walking up to the front door and slipping my key into the hole.

“I texted the address to my sister in case you end up being a murderer.”

At first, I laugh but then she has a straight face, so she must be serious.

The big wooden door creaks as it opens, and I gesture her inside. I wasn’t expecting company so I hope the place looks okay. I walk over to the light switches and turn them on, illuminating the living room and kitchen area.

She looks around, and I walk to the double doors of the den. “Feel free to look around. Just gonna grab that collection for you.”

Instead she follows me, and takes a deep breath as she enters my office. Others would probably make fun of me because it’s old-school with the all wood built-in’s and the all wood desk.

“This is beautiful. You even have a fireplace.” She looks around, taking the wide open space in.

My computer sits on my desk, and Leslie sits down in my chair. “You are a writer, huh?”

The printed copy of the first twenty chapters are sitting on my desk, and she starts to read the first page before I snatch it.

“Sorry, it’s not ready for anyone else’s eyes yet.”

Her hands fly up in front of her body. “Understandable.”

I go to my bookshelf and grab Thirteen Problems and hand it to her before stopping at the double doors. She is still sitting in my chair, but has opened the book to the first story.

“Would you like to stay here and read? I can go make some coffee or grab you a drink.”
