He nodded. “We can try it. If it fails, I’m going to find Tyler and give him the slow, grueling death he deserves.”

“There you are. You alright?” Sheila called as she entered the room. Kyle and Malcom were behind her and all of them wore matching expressions of concern.

I really didn’t want to tell everyone about how I’d fucked up with the bond. “I’m okay.”

“Well, you two look rather cozy,” Sheila teased.

My hand was now on Alec’s bicep, and we were inches from each other. I lowered my hand and took a step back.

“She lost control,” Malcom said.

“What happened out there?” Kyle asked.

“I think I wasn’t focused,” I lied.

“Let me try something with her,” Alec said.

“She has to figure this out. She can’t risk losing control of her wolf if she’s going to go for alpha,” Malcom said.

I glared at him. He was talking about me as if I wasn’t there. “I’m fully aware of what’s necessary.”

“It’s that bond, isn’t it?” Kyle asked. “It’s getting stronger.”

“Is that true?” Sheila asked.

“Look, I will deal with Tyler after we help Spencer. We all agreed that we need his support when I return to Wolf Creek.” The whole Tyler thing was driving me crazy, but the thought of sending any of my friends after him was too much. I didn’t want them getting hurt because of me.

“I want to try a wolf night,” Alec said.

“You sure that’s a good idea? Her wolf bolted. She was untamed, wild,” Malcom said.

“I wasn’t that bad,” I said.

“Lola, you were trying to get out. You weren’t in control at all,” Sheila said.

“One night,” Alec said. “If we can’t bring the control back, I’m going after Tyler myself.”

“If you go after Tyler, I’m going with you,” Malcom said.

“You can’t. You and Lola have other work to do. Kyle and I can go with Alec,” Sheila offered.

“I don’t want any of you doing that for me,” I said.

“What else are you going to do? You can’t kill the bastard and he won’t break the bond,” Sheila said.

Frustration made my chest feel tight. I wanted to fight my own battles. I wanted to be the one to make Tyler pay for the years of pain he’d caused me, but I didn’t want the lifetime of mourning him. “Fine.”

“What the fuck is a wolf night? Anyone going to explain for us non-shifters?” Star asked.

I looked over at Alec, wondering the same thing.

“We shift near moonrise and we don’t return to human form till dawn. No matter what, no shifting back. It’s challenging because we don’t usually stay in wolf form that long,” Alec said.

“And it’s had some adverse effects,” Sheila grumbled.

“Like what?” I asked.

“You’ll be fine,” Alec assured me.
