Nervous flutters filled my stomach. What if I failed? No.I couldn’t fail. I wasn’t going to give myself that option. I got myself into this mess, and I was going to get myself out.

“Why did you do it?” Alec asked.

“Ask for the magic?”

He nodded.

“You know what a mating bond feels like. Imagine feeling that pull for someone who spent years hurting you,” I said.

“I know all that. It’s the same thing you’ve been dealing with, and we had a plan to end it. Why now?”

“It was too much,” I admitted. “I was starting to doubt myself.”

“You thought you might go to him.” Alec’s jaw tensed.

I swallowed hard, hating that he was right. “I can’t do that.”

“I wish you’d let me kill him,” Alec said.

“We’ve been over this, and I don’t want to talk about it again. Now isn’t the time.” I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. Deep inside, I felt my wolf stir. It was as if she was waking from a nap, but she was quickly perking up. I opened my eyes. “Time to shift.”

I didn’t wait for a response before I stripped off my clothes and took off at a run, calling to my wolf. She responded quickly; the sleepy sensation gone. My body shuddered as it began the change and soon, I was on all fours, feeling the wind in my fur.
