But neither was my wolf. Terror gripped me. “That wasn’t just dirt.” Panting, I tried to control myself. It was painful to fight the change. Tears streamed down my cheeks.

Sheila knelt next to me. “Lola, can you get up? I’ll walk you back to Star’s. She can help.”

My body began to break, bones cracking and reforming. I screamed. I’d had painful shifts before, but nothing like this. I could feel every inch of me reforming, searing pain radiating across my body. I struggled to remain conscious, my vision going blurry and dark around the edges.

Just as I was about to pass out, the pain eased. I was in my wolf form and only vaguely aware of the fact that I wasn’t the one in control anymore.

My wolf howled, calling out to her mate.

“Lola, don’t do this,” Sheila called.

My wolf gave her a quick glance, then she took off, tearing through the woods, following Tyler’s scent.

Stop, stop. You can’t do this. Go back, please.Desperation took hold, I begged and pleaded, but my wolf was in charge. There was no reaching her.

My only hope was that my friends would break the bond before I reached Tyler.
