“Lola.”

Someone was calling my name but it was way too fucking early for that. I kept my eyes closed, hoping it was my imagination.

“Lola, wake up.”

I groaned. I wasn’t ready to get up yet. “Go away.”

“It’s two in the afternoon. You’re out of time, princess.”

The tone was mocking and I realized it wasn’t one of my friends. That made me open my eyes. Spencer was standing near the bed, an impatient look on his face. “About damn time.”

“I just went to bed,” I whined.

“I let you sleep as long as possible. It’s time to get ready,” he said. “I guess killing your mate takes a lot out of you.”

I sat up and tossed the covers aside. “Are you judging me?”

He lifted a skeptical brow.

“You don’t know shit about me and you don’t get to judge me. You’d rather see me with an abusive mate than safe and healthy? Fuck you, asshole,” I said.

“I didn’t say that.” He seemed amused by my outburst. “If you’d grown up in my home and anyone harmed you, I’d have killed them myself.”

“So what’s with the judgy comment?” I asked as I climbed out of the bed.

“You’re the one interpreting it as judgy, princess,” he said.

“Stop calling me that.” I walked past him, toward the door.

“Where you going?”

“I just woke up, where do you think I’m going? I have to pee.” I rolled my eyes. This was not the way I expected my day to begin. Spencer waking me and reminding me about Tyler were the last things I wanted. The sooner I helped him, the better. I was looking forward to being done with the favor I promised.

And who was he to judge me then play the concerned parent card all in the span of a few seconds? If he’d actually been worried about me, he could have done something about Tyler.

All he cared about was the throne. And I was the sucker who agreed to help him. I still wasn’t sure why I’d agreed to do it, but at least it was nearing the end. Assuming I lived through the whole thing.

I cleaned up in the bathroom, then headed to the kitchen. Was there still coffee this late in the day?

There was coffee, however, there was also Spencer and Malcom waiting for me. The two males were at the table, watching me as I filled a cup. I took a seat near Malcom, opting to avoid being too close to Spencer.

“So, are you finally going to give us some details?” I took a sip of my coffee. It was cold, but it was better than nothing.

Spencer’s expression was a little alarming. He was beaming in an almost insane kind of way. “Oh, I have all the details. I’ve been dreaming of this day for the last nineteen years. I never imagined I’d have help, but that just makes everything easier. By tonight, I will have the throne and you two will have whatever you want.”

“You’re that confident that this will go well?” Malcom asked.

“Without a doubt,” Spencer said.

“So, where’s this crown I’m supposed to take?” I asked.

“The royal residence is in a mansion in the city,” he said. “Fifty rooms, hallways for days, and secret passages galore. The whole thing is built for sneaking around. When it was constructed, the thought was for ease of getting in or out.”

“Or sneaking in mistresses,” Malcom teased.

“That has certainly been done,” Spencer said.
