The dirt road gave way to asphalt and the car got a lot quieter. The vibrations eased and I relaxed my shoulders a bit. Spencer drove past barns and sprawling fields of green. There were less trees here, but I could still see the familiar forest in the distance.

Before long, we were on a freeway, filled with cars. The sun was low in the sky. It was early evening already. My stomach was in knots. Each passing moment was taking us closer to the craziest thing I’d ever done.

Spencer was on his second attempt to overthrow his brother, nineteen years after the first. Most of us didn’t go around challenging kings or even alphas. Here I was assisting in the first, and determined to succeed with the second.

“Why now?” It suddenly hit me that Spencer had waited nineteen years for this. Why hadn’t he broken out sooner? Why bother trying to overthrow his brother again when he could just flee and live on a tropical island somewhere?

“What do you mean?” Spencer asked.

“Why did you wait so long to break out? And why do you even care who the king is? They locked you up and let him do whatever he wanted. Why take it over for yourself?”

“Why do you care about the people in your old pack?” He asked.

“That’s not the same. I get the feeling you could have escaped years ago. Why didn’t you?” I asked.

“Honestly, I gave up. Your mother left me when she found out what I planned to do. I thought she wanted out,” he said. “I made friends with witches and vampires, I built a new life. I figured nobody missed me or cared. So many people I thought were my friends stood by and did nothing after I failed. I was in a dark place for a long time.”

“What changed?” I asked.

He glanced over at me. “Your friend found me. Alec.”

“And he convinced you that the shifter king was terrible?” I didn’t hide my skepticism.

“He told me I had a daughter,” he said. “Being a father was something worth fighting for.”
