“Close your eyes,” Spencer instructed.

I lifted a confused brow.

“Just do it,” he commanded.

With a sigh, I closed my eyes.

“Now, clear your mind, and think about the energy and emotions you can feel. Simply feel.”

I took a deep breath and tried to not worry about all the things that had just happened. After a few breaths, new sensations began to flood into my head. Fear and joy, pain and pleasure, happiness and sorrow. A million emotions and a million connections. My eyes snapped open. “What was that?”

“It’s all the alphas. You are connected to them. With practice, you’ll be able to use that power for good.” He shrugged. “Or evil, I suppose. Depending on what kind of ruler you are.”

“They can’t go against you,” Malcom said. “The only one who can challenge the king or queen is a blood relative. They physically can’t fight you. They don’t have much of a choice other than to follow you.”

“That sounds like a terrible system,” I said. “What if I go nuts and abuse my power?”

“Then I’ll have to challenge you,” Malcom teased.

“I’m serious,” I said.

“There are ways around it, but they aren’t easy. It’s why Chris’s lack of an heir was such a big deal,” Spencer explained.

“Guess you better have a few kids so if you are drunk with power, they can take you out,” Malcom said.

I elbowed him. “I’m not ready to think about kids, thank you. But I do wish Alec was here. And Sheila and Kyle. They should be here.”

“I can make that happen,” Star said. “Wanna give me your car keys?”

“Give my keys to the blind witch?” Spencer said. “I don’t think so.”

“That’s insulting. You know I have ways of seeing without my eyes.” Star set her hands on her hips.

“I’ll go. You stay and make sure Lola doesn’t go challenging anyone else tonight.” Malcom stepped toward me and pulled me into a hug. “I’m proud of you.”

I squeezed him tight. “Thank you. You’re going to help me with this, right?”

“Till the end,” he said. “You’re stuck with me now.”

I laughed as I released him. “Lucky me.”
