Kyle blinked a few times before stepping closer to me. “Seriously? I’m a protector, not an alpha.”

“You’re both,” I said. “And you’re exactly what Wolf Creek needs. Someone who cares about them, and will guide them, while letting them find their unique place in the real world.”

“Yeah, Kyle!” Someone shouted.

“I didn’t hear him accept yet,” a woman pointed out.

“What do you say?” I asked.

“What do they say?” He asked, looking out to the gathered shifters. “Anyone object?”

We waited, looking around for any signs that someone else wanted to claim the position for themselves. Nobody spoke.

“Alright,” Kyle said. “I’ll do my best.”

“Wolf Creek, I give you your new alpha.” I gestured to Kyle.

The shifters charged forward, surrounding us as they cheered and hollered. Kyle was lifted into the air on a pair of shoulders and carried around the field. Instead of tension, I felt relief, joy, and peace coming from the shifters all around us.

Kyle would have his hands full here, but if anyone could get Wolf Creek where it needed to be, it was him.
