“I learned my lesson. It just took me a while,” Spencer said. “That’s why you’re going to help me. To prevent others from the same fate as your mother. Or you.”

“I’m helping you because I need to buy myself some time,” I said.

“If you say so,” he said.

“It’s getting late,” Star said. “We can talk more in the morning.”

Spencer grumbled something under his breath, but I didn’t pay enough attention to hear what he said. I wasn’t in the mood to deal with any more of this. Helping him was a step toward the next part of getting my life back.

I glanced toward Alec, hoping to catch his attention. I wanted a word with him before we turned in for the night. He was chatting with Malcom and the two looked deep in conversation. At least I knew he was recovering from his injuries. Our conversation would have to wait until morning.

“This way,” Star called with a lift of her chin.

Reluctantly, I turned away from the others and followed her.
