At the end of the hall, I spot a huge set of double doors that are wide open. Light pours from them into the hall and the sound of people floats toward us. My insides tighten as we approach. I have no idea what to expect.

Bright lights greet me as we walk through the wide doors. The room is a buzz of conversation and delicious smells fill the air. My stomach growls in anticipation. There are a dozen or so large round tables spread around the room and each of them is covered in serving dishes of food.

“Let’s see,” Sadie says, standing on her tiptoes as she looks around. “There’s room over there.” She points to a table where two men are sitting. Eight empty plates surround them.

“Sure,” I say with a shrug. We start to walk toward the table but movement catches my eye and I turn to see Damon waving to me.

Frowning, I tug on Sadie’s sleeve. She turns and sees what I’m looking at, then looks back at me. “If he did the spell correctly, you might as well walk over there on your own before he makes you walk there.”

Based on the strange sensation that I felt when he cast the spell, I’m pretty sure it’s working. And I’m not ready to test it out yet. With a sigh, I turn toward him. “You’re coming with me.” After grabbing hold of Sadie’s arm, I drag us both over to his table.

Sadie doesn’t resist but her movements feel forced as we walk.

“Well, well, if it isn’t the belle of the ball,” Damon says. “Have a seat.”

I hesitate.

“I said, have a seat.” His words strike me like an invisible force, squeezing around my chest. For a moment, I resist, just to see what it’s like. Then my body gives in to his command and in awkward, stiff movements, I take a chair at the table.

Sadie takes the seat next to me. “Don’t fight it,” she whispers. “I don’t want you to get hurt.”

“You really should just listen to me,” Damon says. “This will be so much easier on you if you cooperate.”

“Then you won’t get to have any fun,” I say. “We both know you wouldn’t do this if you didn’t like humiliating people.”

He grins. “We’re just getting started, darling.”

“Not your darling,” I snap.

“Damon, go easy on her. It is her first day,” the other twin says.

My brow furrows as I look at him. He’d already helped me once today by giving me a book and a pencil. It was clear he wasn’t the same as his brother even though they shared the same perfect face.

“If you wanted a pet for the night, you should have volunteered, Corbin,” Damon says.

“I don’t want a pet,” the twin I know now is named Corbin says. “She’s not a toy.”

Damon shrugs. “She’s an angel. Why do you care?”

“Half angel,” Sadie says.

“Not helping,” I say through gritted teeth.

“Half?” Damon cocks an eyebrow. “Interesting. You smell like a full angel.”

“I smell like what?” I blink at him in surprise.

“Angels have a very distinct smell,” he says.

“Alright, can we just eat?” Corbin asks. “Now that you’ve made us all uncomfortable?”

Damon picks up his fork and jabs it into a cut piece of steak on his plate. “Bon appetite.”

My face burns as I force myself to fill my plate with some of the food in front of me. I hate this man. He’s awful. And I have a feeling he’s just getting started.

All through dinner, I wait for Damon to do something. I expect that he’ll make me dance on the table or bark like a dog or some other foolish task to make me look like an idiot. To my surprise, he ignores me while we eat.

Sadie catches my eye a few times and then looks to Damon and I don’t have to be a mind reader to know she’s questioning the whole thing too. I force myself to eat despite the heavy sense of dread weighing on me. What is he waiting for?
