“Seats,”Adrian says.

I wince, realizing that I probably shouldn’t call him by his first name anymore. “Professor…” I let the word hang in the air and feel the tension between us.

“Cardale,” he says.

“Right, ProfessorCardale,” I say as I sit in one of the chairs.

Sadie takes the seat next to me and catches my eye. Her brow furrows but I shake my head. I’m not going to explain it right now. Maybe not ever. So what if I had a weird and completely conflicting relationship with a professor? It wasn’t like anything happened between us.

Even as I try to tell myself that I can let it all go and move on, I know it’s not that easy. There’s something different about him and even though I want to ignore that, I can’t. The two of us are going to have some words about the whole not telling me he’s a professor thing. How could he leave that part out? I honestly thought he was a student. I’m glaring at him and I swear he’s enjoying it. Every time I catch his eye, he gives me a smug grin.

“Today’s lesson is about summoning,” he says. “Each supernatural being has a way to use their magic to make things come to you. It’s done differently for everyone but it’s very helpful. In a fight, you could summon a weapon. If you’re too lazy to get up and change the channel, you could summon the remote.”

The students around me laugh. I can tell they’re comfortable around him. He’s got an easygoing presence and speaks to us like we’re equals. He’s not trying to induce fear. It’s a nice change.

I’m still not thrilled with the lack of information from him, but I am curious to learn what he’s talking about. Though, I have to admit, I’m wondering if now is when I fail.

They’ve told me I’m half angel and half human. What if the human part of me keeps me from being able to do anything special? And can angels even do magic in the first place? I thought angels were heavenly beings who pushed you away from oncoming traffic or watched out for you. Okay, I never believed that, but that’s the only thing I could think of when it came to angels.

“How many of you have successfully completed a summoning spell or charm before?” Adrian - Professor Cardale - is sitting on the desk now. And I notice that he’s not wearing the uniform. He never has. I should have caught that sooner.

Instead, he’s dressed in dark jeans and a black tee shirt that no teacher has any business wearing. He would look more at home on the cover of a fashion magazine or a red carpet than he does here. His long dark hair is tucked behind his ears in a casual way that makes me want to mess it all up.

He runs a hand through his hair and turns to look at me. My cheeks heat as I recall that he can read minds. Fuck. Not fair. Get out of my head.

He grins then looks away from me. “Jule, you want to demonstrate the summoning method you know?

Jule hops out of her chair and walks to the part of the room that looks like a gym. I turn in my chair so I have a better view.

My eyes are trained on Jule as she lifts her arm but a sudden rush of heat behind me makes me turn. Adrian is standing behind me and I can feel him even though he’s not touching me.

My eyes widen and I swallow down my surprise, trying to keep myself focused on anything other than how fucking good he smells.

I’m looking at Jule again just as a kettle ball flies over to her outstretched hand. She grunts when it hits her and then drops it on the ground.

“Well done,” Adrian says. “Anyone else want to try?”

The room is silent and I resist the urge to turn around and look at him again. Every part of my body is begging to lean backward into his warmth. It doesn’t make sense. Sure, he’s sexy as hell, but I have no reason to be feeling this way. I wonder if it’s a lingering effect of the spell from last night. Or the booze.

“Alright, we’ll do some one-on-one,” he says. “Shifters together. Macy and Sadie, you’re together. Kyle and Harper, I’ll work with you two individually.”

Adrian walks away. “Shifters first. Back here.”

Sadie taps my leg. “I’m going to go over there with Macy. Just find a place where you have some room. He’ll come around and teach you the spell.”

“Cool, thanks,” I say.

She and Macy move over to a corner while Kyle waits alone in another corner. Adrian and the shifters are standing in a small circle while he explains things to them.

Jule walks over and takes the seat next to me. “You should ask for some tutoring.”

“Excuse me?” I say.

“You’re a month behind,” she says. “I assume you’re trying for the pass.”
