I nod and close my eyes. Taking deep breaths, I focus on the way he feels. It’s taking every ounce of my willpower to keep my mind clear so I don’t drift into inappropriate thoughts.

Tingles start in my fingers and I feel somethingdifferentthat I can’t quite place. It’s intangible but clearly present. Like the air around my has shifted somehow. I focus on the feeling, trying to harness it.

You feel it, don’t you?I hear Adrian’s voice and my eyes open in surprise. I know he’s not speaking out loud.

You can hear me now, can’t you?

“Yes,” I whisper.

Listen carefully, nobody can know I saved your friends. It had to look real. And now both of us are at risk.

I swallow against a lump in my throat. I can’t believe what I’m hearing.Why?

I told you, I didn’t have a choice. And I couldn’t have you run back to them. If you do, we’re both dead.

Tears blur my vision. He didn’t know me when he arrived at my apartment but he was willing to risk everything to save human lives. Why did you help me?

I don’t want to be a killer. His expression is serious and somehow, I know he’s been through far worse than I have. There’s hurt there. And understanding for what I’ve been through.

Thank you.I don’t have words strong enough to express my feelings but I hope he can tell just how much it means to me. Now I know that if I get out of here, I’ll be reunited with my friends. And if I don’t, at least I know they’re safe.

You’re using some of my magic. Try to extend it. See if you can read someone else’s thoughts.

I know the conversation about what happened on my birthday is finished and I wonder if we’ll ever get to discuss it again. He’s made it clear that we’re both in danger if the word gets out but it’s difficult to think about pretending it never happened.

Knowing I don’t have a choice right now, I nod and look around the room. Jule is sitting in the chair where I left her, watching me and Adrian. I focus on her, sending the strange feeling toward her with my thoughts.

She catches my eye and turns away.New girl is so lucky. I could use some one on one with Professor Hottie.

I move my hand away from Adrian, startled. Then I laugh. He’s laughing too.

“Did I really do that?” I ask.

“You did,” he says. “And now you know what it’s like to be me.”

“Oh, that sucks,” I say. “I mean, it’s bad enough that I have to have you in my head, but it would be far worse to be in everyone’s head.”

“Tell me about it,” he says.

“So that’s it, then? That’s magic?” I ask.

“That’s the start,” he says. “The next step is to get it to work without physical contact.”

I liked the physical contact. At least with him, I did. “I could do that with other kinds of magic too? Like what Jule did with the summoning spell?”

“Yes, eventually,” he says.

The bell rings but I stand there processing what just happened. I have magic. Magic is real. And the guy who killed my friends spared them. And he’s my professor. And he’s ridiculously sexy.

And he’s totally off limits.

The next few months are going to be very interesting.
